Kansas: 4 Senate Republicans Side with Democrat Governor on Redistricting Map (gee, I wonder why we hate RINOs?)

Four Kansas state Senate Republicans on Monday night voted with Democrats to protect Gov. Laura Kelly’s (D) veto on the state’s redistricted maps.

While the Senate necessitates a two-thirds majority to override the governor’s veto, three of the four Republican senators that voted “no” on Monday changed their votes from the original vote on the map last month.

The chaotic vote ended at 25-14, with Senate President Ty Masterson (R) switching his vote to allow another opportunity for a vote on Tuesday. Republicans need two of the four Republican senators to reverse course and vote to override the veto.

Those four Republicans who opposed overriding the veto are Sens. John Doll (R), Mark Steffen (R), Alicia Straub (R), and Dennis Pyle (R). Doll, Steffen, and Straub switched their vote to “no” from last month’s vote.

According to the Topeka Capital-Journal, the Senate Republican supermajority was “not expected to have a difficult time finding the votes to pass Senate Bill 355 and the map, dubbed ‘Ad Astra 2.'”

But after Sen. Mike Thompson disappeared from the Senate chamber, the Senate was jammed without the ability to vote against the veto. Thompson’s staff was unable to locate the senator, which reportedly forced the Senate leader to constrain senators to remain seated while the Thompson was located. Senators reportedly had to ask to go to the bathroom. Thompson was never found.

After more than two hours of forcing senators to remain in their Senate chamber seats while the vote was ongoing, the four Republicans joined Democrats in blocking the veto of the map’s passage.

The Dems don’t need to steal elections. We give them what they want whenever we can.

The “disappearing” Senator Mike Thompson is also a Republican. Was his “disappearance” intentional? I guess time will tell.

Three of these 5 Assistant Democrats are freshman legislators who should have well-funded primary opposition next time around. Note that no Kansas state Senators are up for re-election in 2022; they don’t face the voters again until 2024.

Doll is a well-known piece of shit and the ultimate RINO, so this is to be expected from him; he’ll probably switch parties — again — in the near future. Thompson is a liberal coward from Johnson County (”Land of the Karens”) who barely won in 2020 and will lose one way or another in ‘24.

Are the federal and state maps done as a package? Draw up a somewhat more pro-dem version that destroys the seats of the RINOs.

RINOs: Golly, the way they phrased it to us it just sounded so gosh darn fair we decided to just give in without a fight. Maybe some good will come of this, indirectly I mean. Political fights are so messy.

Kansas has always been Republican, but many Republicans in Kansas are not conservatives. The left wing Governor used to be a Republican and many like her still call themselves Republican, but they vote like radical left wingers. All of this dates back to prior to the Civil War when New England abolitionists flocked into Kansas to ensure that the state would be admitted to the Union as a Free State. Their descendants are very Liberal to this very day. However, these folks refused to integrate their schools, and continue to prefer to live in white neighborhoods.

Could you imagine what this country would be like if the opposition party actually opposed things with zeal and vigor?

Tuesday Update: The Kansas Senate on Tuesday afternoon passed a bill to override the governor’s veto on the Ad Astra 2 congressional redistricting map. The vote passed 27-11. The measure, which failed on Monday when Senate President Ty Masterson used a procedural move to take up a new vote, now heads to the Kansas House.

This is good news.
