'A slap in the face': Hunger strikes and protests rock Oakland ahead of school closures
SF Gate ^ | February 8, 2022 | by Cat Ferguson

Thousands of Oakland’s students, parents and teachers have taken to the streets in the last week — and two teachers are on their eighth day of a hunger strike — protesting proposed school closures that would disproportionately affect Black students in low-income neighborhoods.

The Oakland school board will vote Tuesday night on whether to close eight schools around the city.

Oakland Unified has struggled with finances for years, both because of falling enrollment and — according to a 2018 grand jury report — because of massive overspending on educational consultants and administrative services. (The district spent over $33 million in the last school year on "consultants" and approved construction on a new central office building estimated to cost $48 million.) While the district receives some of the highest per-student funding in the state, its teachers are paid some of the lowest wages in California. Many schools struggle to afford librarians and janitors.

Critics of the proposed closures say they will cause significant harm to Black students in Oakland, who have already been disproportionately affected by the pandemic and past school closures. Forty-three percent of students at the schools on the chopping block are Black, compared with 22% of Oakland public school students overall, according to Oaklandside.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Exactly how the state of California treats their mental health patients. Make a big administrative facade with all the bells and whistles, treat nurses and psych staff like shit and trick down a bunch of BS”upgrades than help neither patients or staff.

Problem solved.

One need only look at the billions spent for drug crisis( opioids now) or the homeless catastrophe to see how California has a losing format and yet continues to prop it up.

Bureaucrats make the money and do nothing to help anyone Just like god communists

It’s hard to get union teacher to come to work. Work is a dirty word to union types.

The education system in our nation today is corrupt. The purpose of the system has changed over the year from educating our children to become a gravy train for “educators”.

Three proposals would go a long way to solving the problem.

1 - Return schools to the locals
2 - Prohibit unions
3 - Get the Federal Government out of education

Out of curiosity I went to the Oakland School District Board website. I found this:

Reperations for Black Students On March 24, 2021, the OUSD Board of Education passed the Reparations for Black Students Resolution that recognizes the impact of structural societal racism over many generations on our African-American families, and creates a task force to prioritize action on a number of measures to address these issues in our schools.

No real surprise there. The liberal loons in Oakland have been whacked out for years.

When I went to meet with my daughter’s highschool principal years ago I was astonished seeing his office. It looked like an office of the CEO of a fortune 100 conglomerate. Government hacks figured out long ago that no one is minding the store and they can spend any amount of money they want, usually on themselves.

This has been going on over 40 years. I remember painting for a summer job at a BOCES School. Walked into a room with 40 brand new tape video recorder machines and TV's on stands, never used. They said if they didn't spend their budget on something it would be cut the following year. So they wasted it.

Just who, exactly, were these MILLIONS distributed to??

I’d like to see a breakdown of these “consultants”, by name and specialty.

Sounds like typical leftist/Dem paybacks/kickbacks.

Huh….So they formed a “task force” to recognize things.

Impressive!

Not!

I wonder how much extra grift this task force is collecting, from the state.

“They said if they didn’t spend their budget on something it would be cut the following year. So they wasted it.”

Sadly, it works that way in the military, too. I spent a LOT of $ on stuff we didn’t really NEED at the end of fiscal years. Computer parts, software, etc. I hated that part of my job, but it was a necessary evil to keep the Industrial Military Complex humming along. :(

Where have all the children gone?

No oversight means they act like kids in a candy store. They take lavish trips disguised as conferences or "training." They purchase expensive furnishings for their offices, have lunches catered 2 or 3 times a week, all on the taxpayer dime.

And NOTHING ever happens to these parasites. NOTHING!

Yep. Local government in Orange county Florida (Orlando) is constantly repairing sidewalks that don’t need fixing. Right in my own neighborhood. Just using up their budgets I’m sure.

The Orlando police chief (Mina) spent tens of thousands of dollars on a trip to Qatar a few years ago on a fact finding mission. Complete BS.

If that was a copy-and-paste from there website, the misspelling of reparations at the head of the label is appalling. For an education organization, having the same word both misspelled and spelled correctly in the same item is shameful.

I have to fess up. The misspelling was my fault. The body in italics was the cut and paste. For some reason it got past spell Czech.

Remind me again of the political make-up of Oakland’s governing bodies including school boards? I am sure I will be shocked/S.
