France Braces For Blackouts As Gas Stockpiles Dwindle

Europe’s energy crisis has led to a shortage of natural gas supplies, and France could pay the price.

French natural gas pipeline operator GRTgaz warned that gas stockpiles are much lower at this point in the year than they have been during years past.

France's energy problems have been exacerbated by the lower-than-usual capacity at the country's nuclear power plants.

The Brits aren't the only European nation to find itself on the verge of a full-blown energy crisis... French natural gas pipeline operator GRTgaz warned that French gas stockpiles are much lower at this point in the year than they have been during years past - and as a result, they run the risk of potentially being depleted before the winter is up, a disaster that could make last year's deep freeze in Texas look tame if a sudden cold snap sends demand soaring.

...

We’ll probably be close to zero toward the end of March.. GRTgaz chief Thierry Trouve said

...

the most precarious for French gas inventories since they arrived at their lowest seasonal level since 2018. Inventories are now at the lowest seasonal level since 2018, when the country ended the heating season with storage at a record-low of just 3%.

...

France's energy problems have been exacerbated by the lower-than-usual capacity at the country's nuclear power plants, some of which have been closed

...

France's energy woes could create a serious political problem for President Emmanuel Macron ahead of elections in April. Energy inflation is already creating serious problems in the UK, and if renewable power generation lags

Earth's magnetic field is also getting weak at this time. The most visible consequence is the undisciplined polar vortex. Instead of remaining high and tight above the poles, it degenerates into "petal" shapes. That allows deep incursions of cold from the poles toward the equator...recall what has happened to Texas the last two years. The other case occurs as well. Warm air can invade the polar regions. Observe the balmy weather enjoyed by Alaska on an intermittent basis.

Thanks, I knew there would be a Freeper that could explain why the Earth has volcanic activity.

I answered my own question:

https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/hawaii-geothermal-area

30% of electricity on the Island of Hawaii comes from this geothermal plant.

Hydro is solar. The sun evaporates the water that makes the rain that makes the rivers flow. Nuclear is not solar. oil/gas is not solar because in spite of people calling them fossil fuels, there is considerable evidence that they were captured from the nebula from which the earth and the rest of the solar system was formed. Coal is fossil.

Good analogy, I tell my freshmen oil is just fossilized sunlight. You are close trees and terrestrial biomass do not produce oil under normal Geological conditions they turn to peat then coal of various grades then ultimately methane gas and solid graphite carbon. Liquid hydrocarbons are nearly all formed from kerogen which has been deep enough long enough to have gone through the oil window. The biomass that formed kerogen in the past is micro marine algae ,freshwater algae and blackish diatoms. This is why 90+ % of liquid hydrocarbons are found in former Marine sedimentary basins. Fresh water lakes of sufficient size can also produce significant micro algae or diatoms it takes over a tonne of prehistoric biomass to make a single gallon of liquid petrol.

Yes as a matter of fact I am a MSc petroleum geologist 20+ years in the industry. PhD in hydrogeology as well.

I have done well over a thousand geochemical analysis of oils from 6 continent’s basins over 20+ years as a petroleum geologist I have never once seen a single sample that did not carry biological markers from micro algae, diatoms,or foraminifera on three very rare occasions I saw coaly resinitic signatures that was a very rare case in the Pinghu Formation in East China. The isotopes of O16/O18 also confirm biological origin of every oil I have ever sampled. Abiotic oil is a myth no working professional geologist has gotten anyone else in the field to do a peer reviewed confirmation of it. If you have a peer reviewed study with geochem and isotopic analysis id love to see it.

I say deport the greenies to Greenland. They way they’ll be begging for some global warming.

In all seriousness, we need to do a better job at teaching history. During the past few thousand years, life during the cooling periods sucked (i.e. Little Ice Age, Dark Age, and Greek Dark Age). But life during the warming periods are pretty darn good (i.e. Minoan Warm Period, Roman Warm Period, Medieval Warm Period, and Current Warm Period).

Perhaps if people realized that it'd be harder to convince folks to hate what we have going on right now.

Lunacy is a byproduct of politics these days.

I would say lunacy is a DRIVER of politics these days.

I shall agree with your view. Lunacy abounds, and wants to condemn commonsense as it declares itself both lunatic judge and lunatic jury.

France found cracks in one of its standardized PWR designs during a routine checkup this has taken now 17 of their 55 strong fleet which is 70% of their electricity supply off line for emergency repairs and checks. They obviously have to replace those unplanned drop outs with something gas is the logical choice as gas plants are usually kept on standby for peak loads and can be turned on cheaply and quickly. France has 20% of there total capacity down due to those reactors off line. Normally France has a fleet wide capacity factor in the mid 90% far exceeding gas and even coal plants this is a once in a lifetime technical issue. Those plants have 60 year lifetimes this has happened once and won’t happen again now that they know what to look for.

You might expect microfossils in anything that's been sitting around for 3 billion years and oozing through rocks. See also abiotic oil theory

Interesting, but not $21.00 interesting. I suspect that the truth lies somewhere between the biological origin and an abiotic irigin. It strikes me as very unlikely that none of the hydrocarbons that make up so much of the outer planets didn’t get incorporated into the earth at the time of formation.

Abotic methane fron mantle rocks is not common but also not all that rare. Methane doesn’t polymerize to higher hydrocarbons methane is CH4 higher hydrocarbons are CH2(n)+CH2(n)+.... Methane does exactly the opposite under high heat and pressure forming hydrogen and solid carbon the hydrogen being so reactive it hydrates any mear by minerals.

Like I said in over 20+ years doing thousands of geochemical analyses on oils form nearly every basin in the world. I nor any other geochemistry expert has ever seen a liquid hydrocarbon sample that didn’t have at least one of the three biological markers. Not a single sample anywhere EVER. its a great theory that has no peer reviewed examples by any professional scientist who do these analysts every day for every oil company on earth. Outer space hydrocarbons are all in the outer solar system why? Because the temperature needed to liquidfy methane , ethane or propane is below negative 50C those are the only liquid hydrocarbons in the outer solar system only trace amounts of butane, heptane or pentane have ever been spectrographed. C1,C2 being the bulk with tiny amounts of C3 and trace amounts of C4,5,6 there is no mechanisms to break the higher energy carbon carbon bonds nor a catalyst to cause double carbon single hydrogen bonding to form higher hydrocarbons chains. All liquid hydrocarbons on earth started as much longer chain organics that under heat and pressure were split into smaller chains breaking at the single carbon carbon bonds. Cellulose, hemicellulose ,lignin all have thousands to hundreds of thousands of carbon carbon bonds those when subjected to heat and pressure under ground break into chains of 5 to 25 in length to be liquid at STP conditions. The Germans figured out if you use platinum under low pressure and just high enough temps you can take carbon monoxide and hydrogen break the much easier to breal carbon oxygen bond and add hydrogen this is FT synthesis. The pressures in the crust vastly exceed what FT would work at at high pressures FT yields methane only this says nothing of platinum being at part per trillion or less concentrations in the crust.
