Top hardline Russian general warns Putin NOT to invade Ukraine and accuses him of a 'criminal policy of provoking a war' in rare outbreak of internal dissent as Emmanuel Macron flies to Moscow for talks

A top retired Russian general has warned Vladimir Putin not to go to war with Ukraine, accusing the leader of whipping up an 'artificial' conflict to distract from his domestic problems.

Colonel-General Leonid Ivashov, 78, penned an open letter titled 'The Eve of War' in which he blasted Putin's 'criminal policy of provoking a war' despite Russia not facing any 'critical threats'...

Ivashov,.. previously served as Putin's chief of military cooperation in the Ministry of Defence.

Ivashov said: 'As for external threats, they are certainly present. But, according to our expert assessment, they are not currently critical, directly threatening the existence of Russian statehood and its vital interests.'...

In his letter, Ivashov argues that Ukraine has a right to self-defence as an independent nation, and the international backlash to the annexation of Crimea 'convincingly shows the failure of Russian foreign policy'.

He continued: 'Attempts to "love" the Russian Federation and its leadership through an ultimatum and threats of the use of force are senseless and extremely dangerous.

'The use of military force against Ukraine, firstly, will call into question the existence of Russia itself as a state; secondly, it will forever make Russians and Ukrainians mortal enemies.

'Thirdly, there will be tens of thousands of dead young, healthy men on one side and on the other, which will certainly affect the future demographic situation in our dying countries.

'On the battlefield, if this happens, Russian troops will face not only Ukrainian military personnel, among whom there will be many Russian guys, but also military personnel and equipment from many NATO countries, and the member states of the alliance will be obliged to declare war on Russia.'...

The hardline general then questions why would Putin risk such hostility and conflict, concluding that it is a distraction from the country's internal problems.

Despite what we think about how woke our Military might be, the aging Russian General probably has a major amount of respect for what our military can do and what kind of casualties would result on all sides if a real war broke out.

As of right now, I think the chances of Russia invading Ukraine is 20%. That went up to almost 50% for me last week when Putin started bristling about nukes, which as a threat of escalation meant to scare away the timid, which signaled to me that they are legitimately strategizing over the scenarios. All in all, what they stand to gain and their worst case risks tell me they wont go.

However, the real wildcard here is China.
What are they promising to give Russia to do it? Do they need them as a diversion while they take Taiwan? What don’t we know about their joint plans?

Pretty much the same issues Biden has in the US.

This would be a bum fight smelling of wine, vodka, blood, and urine.

The USA is not exactly a healthy spring chicken either. I predict a collapse in America before a collapse of Russia.

Communist believe their cause is just. They sense weakness (spineless US) and want world denomination. A few cracked eggs isn’t going to slow them down.

The Russia-China partnership is a scary. If they are thinking short-term Russia will not invade. If Putin / China is thinking long-term, Russia will invade. Now might be the time to strike, with a demented, crippled US president in office that will do nothing other than stand-by and watch.

I suspect the Russian General major amount of respect is not our military but the Ukraine military. Ukraine was a major part of the formal Soviet Union Military that this General was over at one time. That part of the Soviet Union Military went to Ukraine when Ukraine declared independence.

From Wiki

"Altogether the Armed Forces of Ukraine included about 780,000 personnel, 6,500 tanks, about 7,000 combat armored vehicles, 1,500 combat aircraft, and more than 350 ships. Along with their equipment and personnel, Ukraine's armed forces inherited the battle honors and lineage of the Soviet forces stationed in Ukraine. However, due to the deterioration of Russian-Ukrainian relations and to the continued stigma of being associated with the Soviet Union, in 2015 the President of Ukraine ordered the removal of most of the citations awarded to the Ukrainian units during the Soviet era."

Call me naive,But I cannot fathom a full blown invasion and tens of thousands of Ukraine civilians murdered by Putin. He will be condemned and an international outcast forever. Wouldn't make any sense whatsoever to do this.

In 1990s, Russian Army was not exactly healthy, their performance during the wars in Chechnya attests to this.

Ivashov was forced out in 2000, before the expiration of his contract, not much noticeable since except for participation in a minor monarchist party and occasional political commentaries.

We have a half-assed US ‘President’ squaring off with a for real, Russian strongman who isn’t phased by Biden’s crude attempt at international statesmanship.

As the spokesman for the most powerful national entity in the known universe.... Joe’s loudmouth Jingoism is an unwholesome throwback in the catalogue o US Presidents and in the history of US foreign policy. What a sad and unworthy representation of America.

Where is the obligation if the Ukraine isn't a member of NATO?

The Ukraine needs mandatory military service like they do in Switzerland.
