I believe there was more than that and we killed children and women as part of our attack.
That's what they are telling us. But just about EVERYTHING we've gotten from them was a lie.

It went from: "We surgically killed an ISIS leader" to "Oops we wiped out an innocent family" drip drip drip over the period of about 2 weeks. And they lied and lied before the truth came out.

Yes, that is what I understood it to be. And that picture doesn’t really look like some kind of “blast” destruction. A mess, maybe, but not what I would expect a deadly explosion site to look like.
The speed in which the announcement of mission success, and the venues in which the story was pushed was unusual. They knew they effed up and needed to get a narrative out there quickly. Probably some glory seeking bureaucrat decided to take an action that tipped off the bad guys and what should have been a quick and intense operation became a standoff with no good outcomes.
The children part is the screwed up thing. Special operators know what they're getting into, but they are people, not animals. Knowing some guy in the CIA or State or the Pentagon who took a hot shower and slept in a nice bed yesterday, and will take a hot shower and sleep in a nice bed today make some decision that resulted in children dying while they watched, just so that guy could get a promotion or brag at a cocktail dinner really burns them up.
