Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) announced on Thursday that the state's Public Health Disaster Emergency Proclamation for COVID-19 will end in February.

“We cannot continue to suspend duly enacted laws and treat COVID-19 as a public health emergency indefinitely. After two years, it’s no longer feasible or necessary. The flu and other infectious illnesses are part of our everyday lives, and coronavirus can be managed similarly,” Reynolds said in a statement.

Politics arrives. Restrictions costs votes.

The virus doesn’t care. It will continue killing people in numbers far exceeding pre Covid flu. The numbers will lighten with Spring and then get ugly with the next variant.

Everyone will have a choice of do something or do nothing. Don’t really care what the something is. That will be the choice. It will be very hard for politicians to explain they choose “do nothing” because there is nothing they can do. It is all futile.

That’s not a winning campaign position. A better one would be “we will treat it like the flu”, and not compare the death numbers.

Relevant:

UK influenza/pneumonia deaths year 2018 about 1600

Covid deaths over 2 yrs 157K. So about 78K for single year.

Rather a lot more than flu.

Even the wack job lady running CDC said at least 50% of those with Covid are in the hospital for something else and the fake tests can pick up dead covid debris for 3 months…now do that with any other flu and watch the death numbers skyrocket.

Wow that's a brave move !

the Biotech hit men will be targeting her now

the safest place to be will be behind enemy lines

As soon as the biotech monsters get a new batch of deadly variant cooked up they will release it in Iowa no doubt.

“then get ugly with the next variant.”

Very, very unlikely.

Virus almost always mutate to less deadly, more transmissible.

The 1918 pandemic virus that killed 10s of millions is still around today!

Covid 19 is most likely over. Omicron has pretty much shoved Delta and deadlier variants out the door.

That would not explain the UK numbers. Enormous magnitude difference.

The virus is real. It has been real for 2 years. It kills enormous numbers and it’s not stopping. The weak minded look for something other than simply facing the enemy and dealing with its overwhelming strength. It is a good way to get even more killed.

“Virus almost always mutate to less deadly, more transmissible.”

That’s how Delta was more deadly than Alpha. Right?

As for Omicron, have a look at South Africa’s daily death numbers and how they compare to the week or two just prior to Omicron’s arrival.

My state. If you take a step back, Communism is about the state controlling an knowing what’s best for you. Capitalism is about millions of people making individual decisions that drive the economy.

The problem that the gubmint has millions of people are now seeing that COVID while bad for people with health, age risks isn’t bad for the majority of the population.

The enormous numbers vary about 2% if you throw the kitchen sink at it. https://health.wusf.usf.edu/health-news-florida/2022-02-02/a-johns-hopkins-study-says-ill-founded-lockdowns-did-little-to-limit-covid-deaths

The only way out is through.

Always has been.

Always will be.

Oh I have no interest in mitigation measures, be they government declared or people locking themselves down. I just want numbers to be pure.

I am not surprised govt measures reduced deaths 2%. The virus is overwhelmingly powerful. Why should a govt have any ability to do anything?

There is no law of the universe that says it won’t get even worse.

From what I’ve read hospitalizations and deaths have gone way down in South Africa and they are thinking about opening up.

Also consider we didn’t start using Remdesivir until Delta came around. We watched Remdesivir kill people in the past. I suspect that contributed to the Delta spike.

The fact that the medical community took away our “right to try” with proven to work alternatives is just disgusting and makes me ashamed of my profession.

I’ve written scripts for “horse paste” in the past, for eye lash mites. My patients lived through it!
