He might have lost anyway, but I would attribute the margin to the convoy—politicians are pretty good at seeing which way the wind blows, and unless the conservatives want to loose a third of their base to the Maverick party and another third to Bernier, O’Toole had to be O’Tossed.
From the excitement, he must have been their McConnell.
I watched Candace Bergen yesterday in the Canadian Parliament (YouTube) questioning the liberal…very impressive.
“The vote was forced by a petition from caucus members concerned that he took the party too far away from its core conservative values on social issues.

A very Canadian cross between McCain and Romney. Not as violent and bad-tempered as McCain but not as principled as Romney.
He pandered to the base for the sake of collecting the (weighted) votes of the two conservative candidates who would have beat the snot out of the two establishment candidates had the votes not been weighted, and then signaled his intention to betray the base in his acceptance speech.
