Also, even in California, you don’t need a permit to carry on your own property, at least it used to be that way.

If you've drawn and aimed, not firing could be the last bad decision you ever make. More training for the store owner. I understand not everyone can mentally "get there" but it comes with the awesome responsibility of protecting yourself against those that would kill you.
He had every reason to fire on perp 2. My 2 cents.
