Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards faced a chorus of criticism and questions this morning following an Associated Press report showing he knew about the death of Ronald Greene following a violent interaction with State Police hours after it happened in 2019, USA Today Network reports.
Republican House Speaker Clay Schexnayder said in a statement that if the Democratic governor was complicit in a State Police cover-up it “would demonstrate gross misconduct and the highest level of deceit on behalf of the governor and others.”
But the questions about the timing and extent of the governor’s knowledge about the Ronald Greene case were also coming from leaders of his own party.
“It’s a serious concern,” House Democratic chair Sam Jenkins of Shreveport said. “But we need to see what the governor’s explanation is before we take action. “We need to hear from him.”
USA Today Network is seeking comment from Edwards and his staff, and is also seeking comment from Legislative Black Caucus chair Vincent Pierre, a Democrat from Lafayette.
Greene died in 2019 following a brutal beating by State Police during an arrest in Union Parish near Monroe. His cause of death was first covered up by State Police on the scene who said Greene died from injuries suffered in a car accident during their pursuit of him, before the severity of his beating and investigators’ records became public.

He’s a Democrat.
He knows nothing.
He see nothing.
He hears nothing.

Thanks for still covering this.
I know personally some of the principals in this case, specifically the District Attorney and his staff. They were part of the coverup, sad to say.
I didn’t vote for him, but I encouraged his now First Assistant to run for the job in 2014. She didn’t, and went to work for him. The plan, I learned later, was for Hillary to appoint Belton as a federal judge, but Trump messed up the plan.

Interesting that Speaker @SchexnayderClay
used ‘gross misconduct’ in his description since that is one of the three things that could trigger impeachment. The other two are commitment of malfeasance or felony #lagov #lalege
So the cops beat this guy to death and the governor said nothing because he thought it’d hurt him politically? Is that the gist of this story?
It’s a little more than that. The state police knew what happened, since they beat Greene to death while in handcuffs. So did the sheriff, DA, coroner, and the governor. But they told everyone he died in the wreck.
After a year, the family finally found a lawyer to take the wrongful death suit, and only then did the truth begin to trickle out.
What’s going to get all of them is the coverup, not the crime.

So I see Louisiana has a Republican Lt Governor, which means Bel Edwards will be “forgiven” by the “black leaders” in the legislature (after Edwards does some serious groveling). Not sure how their forgiveness would impact an impeachment.
Unfortunately, our Lt. Gov is an assistant democrat, so he would be a minimal improvement over Edwards. What this event can do is muddy the waters of the reapportionment special session just now underway. It will give our side some leverage by weakening Edwards’ position and splattering some unflattering newspaper ink on him.
Of course they’ll charge on the cover up, instead of manslaughter.

I would say that he knew everything there was to know about it.
