Investigators used a third-party DNA database to find genetic information that resulted in an arrest

A Colorado man who was suspected of killing a teen girl in San Francisco more than 40 years ago was charged with her murder following new DNA evidence, according to prosecutors.

Mark Stanley Personette, 76, was arraigned in court Thursday after being arrested in December in Denver after the San Francisco police, the FBI, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office worked together to investigate the 1978 death of Marissa Harvey, who was 15 years old at the time, according to the Associated Press.

San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin said in a statement that investigators made progress in the 43-year-old cold case when a DNA hit in a genealogy database allegedly linked DNA taken from the crime scene to Personette.

so the corrupt DA can brag about this find...

I find no solace in finding a murderer 40 plus yrs later....that is not justice....

still if this guy is the one, I hope his humiliation infront of his family and friends will be severe.

If it was one of your family members he murdered I suspect you’d be glad they at least finally got him.

I think murders who are caught years later should automatically be sent for execution.

With genetic genealogy there must be more than a few murderers who are waiting for the knock on the door.

Putting him in a cell doesn’t mean squat. and the media doesn’t give the details of the crime. We don’t punish these people. They are monsters.

Oft times justice doesn’t come in this life. It seems less and less these days.

So it seems, and one reason to keep in mind how one lives life. The payment may be more than you thunk. The Lord’s Prayer addresses the solution. There’s a gonna be a whole lot of forgiving going on.

Harvey, a New York City resident, was killed while visiting family in San Francisco.

On the trip, she failed to return with her relatives from a visit to Golden Gate Park.

Her body was found a day later, in nearby Sutro Heights Park.

San Francisco police urged nationwide law enforcement agencies to review their unsolved sexual assault-related homicides involving young women to determine if there is a connection to Personette.

“a genealogy database allegedly linked DNA taken from the crime scene to Personette”.

Hopefully, the Crime Scene Investigator will be available for courtroom testimony, and not deceased after so many years.

At least Personette knows if his ancestors came over on the Mayflower or not.

He might end up dying of natural causes in jail while awaiting trial. This is California, and murder trials can easily take 5-7 years, or more, to commence. If he’s sentenced to death he will most definitely expire before his execution date, unless he lives to be 110 or something.

I do. It would be better the same day as the murder but letting a murderer go even after 40 years is not justice.
