I saw an interview with Pence recently, he said the last time he talked to Trump was this past summer, so it has been a while since they spoke. I never trusted Pence from the start, too much of a usual “republican” politician.

Probably Michael Pence should had said that he couldn't do his part and that it would be up to president pro tempore of the Senate, Patrick Leahy Tom certify the results from the Electoral College. It was a ceremonial role and they were going to do it, with or without Pence being there.

Instead Pence was manipulated into an "useful idiot". Yes, he was in a pickle at that time. So that's why he needed to get out of it. Also, he did not have to be there for the inauguration.

I’ve mentioned this before, but when I was watching Trump’s speech at the Republican Convention, Pence’s wife had an expression of pure hatred on her face as Trump spoke. I don’t think Trump & Pence were ever close.
