Bernie Sanders says a big tax break for the wealthy is out of the Biden spending bill, triggering pushback from moderates threatening to derail the entire package

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont said Wednesday that a big tax break for the wealthy was out of Democrats' Build Back Better plan, and almost immediately triggered a wave of resistance from moderates who argued the issue was far from settled.

The issue at hand is the $10,000 limit on the amount of state and local taxes that people can deduct from their annual bills, known as SALT. Some Democrats from New York, California, and New Jersey are strong advocates of rolling it back or eliminating it entirely, handing a big tax break to high-income earners in high-tax states and cities. Taxpayers used to have unlimited SALT deductions before the new limit was introduced in the 2017 Trump tax law.

But the provision caused angst among many Democrats ...

Last week, Reps. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, Tom Suozzi of New York, and Mikie Sherill of New Jersey issued a statement threatening to oppose the sprawling health, climate, and safety-net spending bill if it didn't include the tax cut...

"SALT remains a top priority," the trio wrote. "We support the President's agenda, and if there are any efforts that include a change in the tax code, then a SALT fix must be part of it. No SALT, no deal."

Translation from the “moderates”: if you don’t give us a way to mask my state’s ridiculous state taxes, I’m hosed in the next election, comrade Bernie!

Congress should be constitutionally required to begin every bill with a reference to the constitutional clause that reasonably gives Congress the specific power to make the bill in the first place.

But in the case of this Biden spending bill, the first line would appropriately read as follows.

"Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States." —Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.

In fact, the second line of Biden's spending bill should include this.

”From the accepted doctrine that the United States is a government of delegated powers, it follows that those not expressly granted, or reasonably to be implied from such as are conferred, are reserved to the states, or to the people. To forestall any suggestion to the contrary, the Tenth Amendment was adopted. The same proposition, otherwise stated, is that powers not granted are prohibited [emphasis added].” —United States v. Butler, 1936.

The key question to ask concerning any federal spending bill is this. How would the nation possibly have survived without the 17th Amendment? /super-sarc

Insights welcome.

The ultimate remedy for unconstitutionally big, alleged election-stealing, Democratic Party-pirated federal and state governments, allegedly manufacturing crises to oppress everybody under their boots...

Consider that the states effectively have "veto power" over continued unpopular, unconstitutional actions of the feds.

More specifically, all the states can effectively “secede” from the unconstitutionally big federal government by doing the following.

Patriots need to primary federal and state elected officials who don't send voters email ASAP that clearly promises to do the following.

Federal and state lawmakers need to promise in their emails to introduce resolutions no later than 100 days after start of new legislative sessions that proposes an amendment to the Constitution to the states, the amendment limited to repealing the 16th and ill-conceived 17th Amendments (16&17A), little or no discussion required imo.

In fact, I challenge the states to ram the repeal amendment for 16&17A through the ratification process faster than Nancy Pelosi irresponsibly rammed unconstitutional Obamacare through the House. /semi-sarc

Again, insights welcome.

That sums it up perfectly. These “moderates” represent some of the wealthiest House districts in the U.S. I can tell you from personal experience that the two NJ representatives are in districts that have been hemorrhaging productive taxpayers to other states for years … and the full SALT deduction was one of the only reasons they would bother staying here in the first place and pay those ridiculous state and local taxes.

This is a lie. By finding someone to complain about a possible tax break for the wealthy being a problem with the moderates is absolutely more stupid than they give him credit for.

About the only thing the liberals did over the last year plus was destroy the most thriving economy in our history while adding on to the mess Obama and Biden got us into while blaming Trump for the failures.

It is getting into election time and the DNC are scrambling to figure out a way to get beyond that. And they are using the way to get it done quick by giving money back to the rich.

Rich don’t need worth, they have that. They need more worth. Moderates cannot control an economy like the rich. And using moderates to bolster an economy with their overall lack of capacity in a few short months is not going to happen. So instead of turning the dogs loose, they tern the elephants loose. Moderates are an important part of the economy but they only grow when they are in the correct atmosphere. The rich guy makes his money from the moderates. But if he can’t supply, the moderates don’t have the products they need to operate. They can’t create with nothing. No one will buy air.

They need a massive influx of money changing hands, more factories and shipping to get the products there, just the right medication for the market the libs have leased back to flourish. And with it you will see the market adjust, inflation go down, interest rates relax...all the little worm fuzzies the voters are looking for. More bang for your buck.

But be aware, if you vote those lying, crooked, creatures back in, it will revert back to chaos, high costs, taxes to cover the giveaways they never had the money to cover to begin with, and covered it for a time by printing money we didn’t have the worth for. Just like 1993 and it crashed in 2000. And I will be terribly not to have someone mention, “It’s the economy stupid.” And no one will learn from this disaster when there looms another one real soon when they can get away with it.

Don’t be fooled. They sent one to do that.

SALT is a tax break for big rich liberals. Its plain and clear. Allows crappy high tax, dem run states to not “pay their fair share”, while not doing anything to improve their own state standard of living.

How many Reps from NJ, NY, MA, CA, and other high tax states will vote for the elimination of the SALT tax?

It is a means to spend taxes in their own states/municipalities while minimizing their contributions to the common (federal) pot. We’ll pay less to Washington so we can pay more to our own bloated state and local gubmints...
