SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A statewide holiday on Election Day to encourage voting. Automated restoration of voting rights for ex-convicts. More time to distribute and count absentee ballots.
Democratic lawmakers have a lengthy wish list in New Mexico as they seek to expand access to voting.
Here are the key changes sought by Democrats and counterpoints from opponents.
State Democrats want to increasing voter access by turning Election Day into a state holiday, closing public schools and nonessential government offices for the day.
A monthlong period for early, in-person voting would be extended to the Sunday before elections, when many people are free of work and chores.
And proposed changes would allow 16-year-olds to cast ballots in local elections for mayor and local boards, councils and commissions.
The voting rights bill seeks to extend the deadline for accepting marked ballots to 7 p.m. on the Friday after an election, adding three days to allow for postal delays for mailed-in ballots.
Voter registration opportunities would be expanded for people without driver’s licenses or state ID cards through online registration where voters must list their social security numbers. Republicans Party leaders say that would increase opportunities for deceitful voting.

But vaccine passports to go to a restaurant or to hold a job!!!
“Expanded Access to Voting” = Easy Cheating.
Might as well just declare Democrats win all races by acclimation.
If they make Election Day into a national holiday, then early voting is a non-starter. If ppl get a paid day off to vote, there’s no need for additional time to vote.
Hey, give those dead people a break. They just want to be able to vote for their favorite Democrat.
Democrats have a functional supermajority.
I am only for 1 thing on that list. I believe that it should be a national holiday for voting in the general elections.
Eliminate early voting, and all the other scams these days want. But we would get more votes by working/normal/decent people if it was a holiday. And keep it on a Tuesday so it wouldn’t be turned into a long weekend.
Make it a day off for performing one of our greatest privileges in a free nation.
Just give them sole responsibility for counting the votes.
They’ll know what to do.
Ok, so we give them a day off to vote. Waddya think these lazy asses are gonna do? They aren’t gonna vote.
Don't they already have the day off, along with the other 364?
No national paid holiday. Just vote on a Saturday. One day early voting confined to seniors and the handicapped on Friday. 8 hours only. Perhaps vets with a DDForm 214 in hand. Veterans day can fall on that Friday. Those that have Veterans day off and want to make a 3 day weekend out of it should not be allowed absentee.
Democrats will sell their souls to stay in power.
Democrats.
I have always favored a national election day holiday and limited absentee voting (military, etc.). Let’s end these 2-3 month voting cycles, mail-in, and drop-box voting. VOTE IN PERSON, SHOW YOUR ID. Seriously, how many people don’t have a valid photo ID in America today. Fund ID for those few people, heck, go to their homes to complete them. Empower them to vote—solve the problem.
With Scytl/dominion/et-al, they already have that.
Oregon hasn’t elected a Republican Gov since they implemented mail in ballots. Last R won with 60% in the 80s.
Republicans should announce that if these laws are passed, they will arrange for all the homeless vagrants to vote for Donald Trump. That will should throw a scare into the Democrats.
