How It Feels to Be an Asian Student in an Elite Public School
NY Times ^ | 25 Jan 2022 | Michael Powell

Tausifa Haque, a 17-year-old daughter of Bangladeshi immigrants, walks in the early morning from her family’s apartment in the Bronx to the elevated subway and rides south to Brooklyn, a journey of one and a half hours.

There she joins a river of teenagers who pour into Brooklyn Technical High School — Bengali and Tibetan, Egyptian and Chinese, Sinhalese and Russian, Dominican and Puerto Rican, West Indian and African American. The cavernous eight-story building holds about 5,850 students, one of the largest and most academically rigorous high schools in the United States.

Her father drives a cab; her mother is a lunchroom attendant. This school is a repository of her dreams and theirs. “This is my great chance,” Tausifa said. “It’s my way out.”

...

Liberal politicians, school leaders and organizers argue such schools are bastions of elitism and, because of low enrollment of Black and Latino students, functionally racist and segregated. Sixty-three percent of the city’s public school students are Black and Latino yet they account for just 15 percent of Brooklyn Tech’s population.

For Asian students, the percentages are flipped: They make up 61 percent of Brooklyn Tech, although they account for 18 percent of the public school population.

Richard Carranza, who served as New York’s schools chancellor until last year, was more caustic. “I just don’t buy into the narrative,” he said, “that any one ethnic group owns admission to these schools.”

Yes, by all means we must quash the overweening privilege of daughters of Bangladeshi cab drivers and lunch ladies.

There is a reason for that, and it isn't racism.

schools are not good or bad. Students make them that way. A good set of students with adequate teachers will score highly.

Asian students score very well because they or their parents were the cream of China before coming here. You cannot just send a bunch of low IQ students to a good school and have them do well. Its not how that works. Good schools are those who can select their students. Either by selective enrollment or by serving a high functioning area.

It all goes back to how a kid is raised IMO.

Also IMO there’s no substitute for a loving male father and female mother that take an invested interest in raising the child......and those are in short supply in some communities.....just my 2 cent

Bangs and PaKis are “Asian” when they need to be by Corporate Media
Discriminated Students and Rape Gangs.
Otherwise they are Sihk, Muslim, Hindu or “Indian”.

Control the narrative at all points, and all costs.

public schools are NOT elite. That’s a contradiction.

Obviously. If you’re surrounded by imbeciles, the percentage of you ending us an imbecile is higher. I taught this to my nephews and nieces. It’s the company you keep, and pick your friends wisely.

My Filipino friend until now, told me how woke the school is, for his kid. 2 years ago, they had a sporting event and they gave out participation medals.

Yes, school is two factors. One is hard working students. The other is smart students. The second one is important because the curriculum will be higher if more than half the students can understand the advanced pace of education. Then the teachers will teach to the speed of their students.

The work ethics of the students have more to do with the parents. If the parents demand their kids get good grades then the students and teachers will expect more and students will see the competition and most will respond.

Our US school system puts a lot of propaganda into good schools and bad schools. Or the teachers union and media says high paying teachers are better. Both are not true. It does not matter how much you pay a teacher. If it did, Catholic schools could not exist.

You simply want your kids to be in school with other kids who do well, both because they are smart and because their parents care. If that group of students is the majority, the teachers will start to demand more and teach at a faster pace.

I am not up on my racial bean counting ; Are all Asians considered the same now? In other words as far as racial quotas are concerned are Bangladeshi, Pakistanis, Indians the same as Cambodians, Vietnamese, Chinese etc etc?
Is this like the Hispanics where you are a minority if it helps the left wing and white adjacent if it hurts the left wing?

I graduated from a private Christian academy, which is also a church. I graduated 2004 and until now, the waiting list goes on for at least 5 years. Why?

For starters, any student who “miraculously” gets accepted has a prerequisite that parents MUST be “workers” of the school.

That means on any day, the parents are tasked with cleaning the school and helping out on as an example, bingo Saturdays. so parents are part of the system. It also cuts costs down too for janitors lol

“How does black culture treat education?”

Which country?

I know a number of Ugandans and Tanzanians who sent or are sending their children to China for higher education opportunites. China has “great” educational packages and are garnering close support from thier students. China will be introducing more industrial engineers and other infrastructure professionals into Africa on a continuing basis. And we all know why. I wonder how much interference the Chinese will put up with from the local guerrilla’s in the war torn regions.

Britain used to receive a few as well, but the current state of broiling tensions both in the UK and the EU have put off a significant number of potentual students and the rolls have been diminished as a result.

So you think that the cab driver and lunch lady parents are the cream of
Bangladesh?...this young lady may in fact have a high IQ but I would also
bet that she has a work ethic second to none. Immigrant Asian kids
probably have a bell curve distribution that is slightly higher in aggregate
IQ to other races but the real reason they succeed is that they out work their
competition. That and if they are not making the grade, tiger-mom is there
to take a bite out of their behinds...

Asian IQ is high and African is low. But the Asians we see, like the new Africans we see are smarter than the average back home. We see the cream. The fact that they may be driving cabs or ladling out soup only shows their drive. Thirty-five years ago there were lots of Russian Jews driving cabs. They did a lot to get here from almost anywhere without unusual intelligence and drive. That is, except for the ones coming over our southern border. That border produces many low IQ individuals including many slaves and criminals.

When you see the standard IQ of countries like Vietnam you see a lower IQ than China. Same with Mongolia. China is in between geographically. So, its likely that the average Chinese is similar in IQ to their neighbors. But like with everything else, the Chinese lie about their average IQ. We get the upper crust so they all seem smart to us.

You are absolutely correct about the Chinese...throughout my career I have
worked with many engineers from China and they are sharp and come from
the top schools...my point is that IQ is not the only factor in overall
immigrant success...Black immigrants from Africa or the Caribbean far out
perform indigenous Blacks...they just out work native born kids and that
plays heavily in their success.
