Attorney General Merrick Garland and members of the U.S. House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol could go to jail if Republicans win control of Congress in the midterm elections, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told Fox News.
"They are running over peoples' civil liberties," said Gingrich, who was speaker from 1995 to 1999.
"You have both with Attorney General Garland and with this Select Committee of January 6th, people who have run amok. They are breaking the rules. They are going after people in a way which is reminiscent of the British monarchy using closed-door systems that we outlawed deliberately because we had seen it."
Gingrich said the panel is "literally just running over the law" and "pursuing innocent people," insisting that they are "basically a lynch mob" and that Garland is "misusing the FBI."

They really should. What that committee is doing is arguably full-blown treason.
They have a better chance of going to Heaven.
Sure. They COULD have a lot of things happen but we’re talkin’ d.c.. The republicrats know which side their toast is buttered on.
I like everything except the "could". I think McCarthy should PLEDGE to investigate and turn over for prosecution.
First Cruz, now this guy. They just don’t get it. You don’t threaten. You just get into power first, THEN lower the boom.
He’s been a private citizen, living his life. What exactly did you expect him to ‘get done?”
Zero chance of this happening. Republicans are spineless.
But it would be nice to see Lizard Cheney held accountable for her role in this inquisition.
From Newtie’s lips to God’s ears.
Only in a just system where there is government accountability, certainly won't happen here.
I like his strategy to change the narrative making the investigators the criminals, very smart. McCarthy needs to take this advice and run with it.
It’s BS. “Breaking the rules” isn’t a crime, and even if it was, a prosecutor has and uses discretion, and a prosecutor has near absolute immunity from prosecution for acts done in the course of prosecution.
In the event a case is actually brought, the last line of defense is the judge.
You are correct. Threats are a waste of breath. Simply inform this lynch mob that they have guaranteed swift and harsh retaliation — and let them guess what it will be.
The authoritarians have had it all their way far too long.
"Could"? "COULD"?!?
You simpering wimp!!! Garland and the rest of the Demonicrats/DeepStaters gave aid and comfort to the enemies of the United States. They should all be tried, convicted, and sentenced to be one-time rope testers.
“Breaking the rules”
**************
In general, NOT expecting people to break the rules is kind of naive.
As the referee says before a boxing match: Gentlemen, protect yourself at all times.”
Heed or bleed.
There are Republicans on the 1/6 committee voting for the subpoenas that are harassing and financially assaulting GOP administration members. It’s hard to see how the GOP can make this a partisan affair after participating in the 1/6 committee.
Even when Trump was i office, they couldn’t put the Witch away...BTW, where is John Durham?????
Well, he could have put both Clintons in seperate men's Prisons, James Carville in an alligator preserve, as an inmate, rescinded the citizenship of every Democrat, and made Sarah Palin President of the US, for a start.
