Signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom last September, Assembly Bill 173 amended state firearms laws to allow California to turn over gun owners’ personal information to gun violence researchers.
Finding there was no “emergency” to warrant restraining California from sharing millions of gun owners’ personal information with gun violence researchers, a federal judge Wednesday declined to block the state’s enactment of Assembly Bill 173.
U.S. District Judge Larry Alan Burns heard from attorneys for Jane and John Does and Attorney General Rob Bonta regarding a constitutional challenge to Assembly Bill 173, a law which amended California firearms laws to authorize the attorney general to disclose gun owners’ personal information to the California Firearm Violence Research Center at UC Davis and any other “bona fide research institution” meeting certain requirements.
Gun owners’ personal information — including their name, address and age — is collected with every firearms sale in California and entered into the “Automated Firearms System” database.

"I just of a couple moving back east."
Researchers? They mean Communist universities, leftist extremist, radicals, et al.
Someone needs to get the list, compare it to a list of democrat voters in California, and then publish a list of all California democrats (names and addresses) who do NOT own a gun. It would be very helpful for people planning home invasions to know which homes will be safe.
What should be co-published is a list of all the people who refuse to have guns in their homes. That would give home invasion robbers and burglars a much safer work environment.
In this case, they are referring to the publicly funded anti-gun “Violence Prevention Research Program” headed up by the pathological liar Garen Wintemute at UC Davis.
If you’ve been involved in any RKBA activities in California, you’ll remember Wintemute. He’s been around since the late 80’s, and was one of the first to suggest hanging civil liability on legal gun manufacturers for the criminal misuse of their products. He was a part of the “saturday night special” gun ban crowd in the 80’s and 90’s, and has been a central figure in conflating suicide risk with gun ownership.
He’s a real piece of work.
And now he knows the who owns exactly what guns, and how many, in California. There’s no other way to sugar coat it.
One HAS to wonder just how many Nazi-like intrusions on personal Liberties and FReedom will cause a mass exodus of Real Americans FRom Kali-ornia!
You KNOW that LIEberal gun-owners will NOT be named!
That’s a real stupid move & asking for trouble. Not that the gun grabbers would care.
On December 20, 2012, Burns wrote an op-ed column in the Los Angeles Times calling for a reinstatement of the federal assault weapons ban. In the article, Burns described himself as an ardent conservative and gun owner who nonetheless felt there was no “social utility” for high-capacity clips. Besides the 31-round magazine Loughner used in his Glock, Burns cited as examples the 100-round drum magazine used by James Holmes in the 2012 Aurora, Colorado shooting and the 30-round magazine used by Adam Lanza in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Burns called for Congress to reinstate the ban without the grandfather clause of the original ban, which allowed those who already owned a weapon on the banned list to keep it. “If we can’t find a way to draw sensible lines with guns that balance individual rights and the public interest,” Burns wrote, “we may as well call the experiment with American democracy a failure.”
