Opinion: Have San Francisco policies done more harm to children than COVID?
SF Gate ^ | January 20, 2022 | by Laura Fagan

San Francisco children make up just 13% of its population, the smallest share of kids among the 100 most populous cities in the United States. Yet for the past 22 months and counting, an outsized burden of COVID-19 mitigation has been placed on them. As a parent, I have become increasingly concerned by the lack of cost-benefit analysis and rigor over which policies are the most effective or even necessary, and which policies may be causing long-term damage. Early and consistent evidence that children are at very little risk of serious COVID-19 complications has been largely ignored, while paranoia and projection have been embraced as the only way.

San Francisco public schools were the first to close and among the last to open. Playgrounds were shut for months after other states reopened theirs, complete with caution tape and zip-tied baby swings. Basketball courts were locked. Libraries and swimming pools stayed closed for more than a year. Youth sports and activities were canceled, and still see many restrictions. Masks have been required for children ages 2 and up in all public settings, even when the mask mandate was briefly lifted for vaccinated adults in summer 2021. Now 2-year-olds are required to provide proof of a negative test if they want to attend large indoor events. Please recognize how ridiculous that sounds.

Whether adults choose to acknowledge it or not, the impact of these rules are not benign. Real and lasting harms to development, learning and physical and mental health from these childhood interruptions continue to surface.

With access to highly effective vaccines and treatments, coupled with a variant that causes much less serious disease even among the unvaccinated, we must consciously choose to abandon zero-risk strategies, and embrace life as it was prior to COVID.

Once San Francisco has voices calling for normalcy you know this is just about over. The fear has subsided and many are coming out of the fog. I think the combination on knowing you’ve a high chance of getting Omicron, a variant similar to the flu, and that the vaccines will do nothing has resulted in many waking up to the absurdity of these restrictions - especially if getting Omicron will protect you like a vaccine (natural immunity) from other variants.

It’s going to be hard to justify, especially when you see places like the UK abandon restrictions & passports.

Probably because not enough men in the Castro district are getting pregnant.

People in England will no longer be legally required to wear face masks from next week, although they will still be recommended in some settings.

The change is part of the prime minister’s wider announcement to end Plan B coronavirus measures in England.

How are the rules changing in England?

from Thursday 20 January, face masks will no longer be required in secondary school classrooms, and the Department for Education will shortly remove guidance on their use in communal areas.

Face coverings will not be legally required in any setting
From Thursday 27 January:

The government “recommends” that people wear face coverings in enclosed or private spaces, but this will be a personal judgement.

In a city full of perverts, that doesn't seem surprising.

“...which policies are the most effective or even necessary...”

Because they said so.

That is true. I was reading an article in The Tablet, written by a parent, about that this morning. These kids are not going to “bounce back,” either mentally or physically.

If even SF parents are admitting that, you know it’s bad.

Fauci and the entire crowd that enabled him have to be held accountable when this is over.
