Press review: German top diplomat’s Russia tour and Nazarbayev’s surprise address

Nazarbayev acknowledges Tokayev’s triumph.

On January 18, Kazakhstan’s first president Nursultan Nazarbayev interrupted his prolonged silence and recorded an address to the nation in which he assessed the recent upheaval in Kazakhstan and, more importantly, attempted to refute rumors that it was caused by a split and disagreements in the country’s political elite. He reiterated that President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has full authority, is the head of the Security Council and will soon be elected chairman of the Nur Otan ruling party. "So, there’s no conflict or standoff among the elite. The rumors on this subject are absolutely groundless," Kazakhstan’s first president insisted.

Alexander Knyazev, an expert on Central Asia, thinks that Nazarbayev did not sound convincing and his address raised even more questions about the causes for the events. In any case, he thinks the unrest was caused by internal issues and any external factors, including international terrorism, are secondary. "Yet the fact that Nazarbayev made an appearance means that the intra-elite conflict that had been going on, perhaps is not over, and an interim or a final compromise had been reached," the expert thinks. Nonetheless, according to him, Nazarbayev‘s political era has ended, and international terrorism will prevail in the assessments of an attempted insurrection from now on. "So international terrorism will be named as the cause of the tragic events although it is absolutely clear that some external forces only took advantage of the moment, though unsuccessfully - thanks to Russia’s interference," he stated, stressing that the main cause of the failed insurrection lies in the internal contradictions of Kazakhstan itself.

Political scientist Talgat Kaliyev also thinks that Nazarbayev’s address is a sign that a critical phase of the crisis in the country is over and a compromise was reached between the opposing groups whoever they are. ...

It would seem they made a deal, and it is what caused the delay with letting Nazarbayev out of his “secure location” :P

As a guess — the family will lose much of the assets but not all and the Bad Guy (of course there will be a designated main Bad Guy) will not be an immediate Nazarbayev’s relative.

One detail which I think TASS missed: Tokayev said that the money taken from the oligarchs (no details :( ) will go into a special fund to help ordinary people. Doing this will surely be of help with the genuine civil unrest part of the events.

Regardless this show is over :P

The next drama to watch in the post-Soviet space is Moldova. Pro-Romanian government right now, depends on gas from Russia, has a contract and does not have the money (both the West and the banks apparently refused to lend about 50 millions that are due tomorrow).

If there is a cutoff, it may get very interesting.

Agree, The West is forcing Moldova to choose Skyrocketing gas and energy prices with Woke and EnviroNazi rules or Russian Policy and affordable energy for all.

Moldova is entirely their own doing.

Three months ago they celebrated new contract which gave Moldova market pricing rather than fix-price long-term deal. It was said that Merkel pressured Putin. Net result: they are paying at least 3x more than before the great new deal.

As for the West — I don’t think they can afford subsidizing other countries now. Printing another 30-40 millions just to give Moldova a long-term loan suddenly is not a good option.

I think in a way this is a test case: if the West does not support them, then whom they are going to support? And how would the local elites react when they realize that the flow of free money dried up?

Let’s see what happens.

Well, nothing happened.

Moldova found the money and paid at the last moment.

So much for this story.
