I wouldn't put it past the Russians to start a war mid-winter but it would be unusual. Normally, they'd wait for mid-May after the "rasputitsa" stops turning all the roads to a gooey mush. Certainly, the Russians have winter-fighting capabilities to a very high degree (as do the Ukrainians), but it seems to me a winter war (the term itself brings back unpleasant memories to Russians) would pile on costs for the conquest of Ukraine (Ukrainian defenders would have the advantage).

I'd expect the invasion to take place next Spring.

But there always is that Crazy Ivan factor . . .
