~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska

NEoffutt1

Offutt Air Force Base is a U.S. Air Force base south of Omaha, adjacent to Bellevue in Sarpy County, Nebraska. It is the headquarters of the U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), the 557th Weather Wing, and the 55th Wing (55 WG) of the Air Combat Command (ACC), the latter serving as the host unit.

NEoffutt5

With the disestablishment of SAC June 1, 1992, Offutt transitioned to Air Combat Command and became the host for the United States Strategic Command’s headquarters.

In 2005, Offutt began several major renovations. The on-base Wherry housing area was demolished for replacement with new housing. A new fire house, AAFES mini-mall, and U.S. Post Office were completed in 2006. Additionally, the Air Force Weather Agency broke ground on a new facility which was completed in 2008.

The new headquarters for STRATCOM, the Command and Control Facility (C2F), was expected to be operational in September 2018.

The 557th Weather Wing, formerly the Air Force Weather Agency, is headquartered at Offutt AFB. It is the lead weather center of the United States Air Force.

The 557th Weather Wing is a United States Air Force formation and its lead military meteorology center. It delivers environmental situational awareness worldwide to the Air Force, the Army, joint warfighters, Unified Combatant Commands, the national intelligence community, and the Secretary of Defense.

NEoffutt4

The 2nd Weather Group delivers timely, relevant and specialized terrestrial, space and climatological global environmental intelligence to joint warfighters, DOD decision-makers, national agencies, and allied nations for the planning and execution of missions across the complete spectrum of military operations through the operation, sustainment and maintenance of Air Force Weather's $277 million strategic center computer complex, production network and applications.

This one caught my eye because I remembered that our Band played at the NCO Club at Offutt back in the day (1980s). The military clubs were our bread and butter across the USA for 8 years.

Poor pups! They’re so little, it doesn’t take much snow to make doing their “business” a mighty frosty endeavor. LOL

Yes, we were hit by the storm yesterday but not too bad. There was a large area of warmer air that was over a lot of the state most of the time and we were in it. Got mostly rain but did end up with a couple of inches of snow in the end. Snowfall totals varied widely across the state.
The biggest problem is black ice on the roads.

It’ll melt tomorrow when temps get into the upper 40s. That’s the way it happens in the south. Here today, gone tomorrow. :-)

My son, who was stationed at Warren AFB in Cheyenne, WY, manned some of the missile bases in western NE. It was a good job even though they were locked underground for 24 hour tours. They had their own chef and nice bunks, though. :)

Howdy, luvie.

Did you go outside for a bit to enjoy your nice weather? Better enjoy it while you can.

Hey there, radu!

It really was nice here today, but, no I didn’t get out much. If I do, my allergies kick in, big time. I did linger when I went out to feed the kitties though. To tell the truth [as if you didn’t know LOL], I’m not much of an outdoors person.

Is the snow melting nicely where you are? I’m sure glad you didn’t get what some locations did!

I can understand the allergy situation. It does stink. But there are times - after it’s been really hot or cold - that it nice to just sit out on the patio or in the yard to enjoy pleasant weather and suffer the consequences. LOL

It won’t be nice enough to sit outside tomorrow but will be nice enough for running a few errands.

No, the snow didn’t melt much today. It was too cold and cloudy for that to happen. It’ll be gone tomorrow though.

We have a couple more warm days before it goes back to “almost winter”. Tomorrow is supposed to get up to 73. And windy. Of course.

As long as it’s nice enough to be able to go somewhere, that’s a good thing. You didn’t have to wait that long for the streets to be de-iced anyway. Thanks goodness!

After all those years I spent flushing twice because it was a long way to SAC HQ.

Always windy ahead of cold fronts. One’s coming through here Wed. night so your wind most like comes from that. You get it first. :-)

Sunshine tomorrow should melt the ice and dry the roads fast. There’s still a lot of black ice out there. We’re almost out from under the clouds now and that’s nice. I’d like to get a peek at the full moon.

Oh, heck! I forgot tonight is the full moon. Thought about it earlier today and then let it completely slip my mind. Gotta go grab a post for it. LOL!

A very pleasant good Tuesday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country and thanks Lauren for this morning's thread.

How's everyone doing this morning?
