“...digital cameras, credit cards, voicemail, cellphones, email, and a myriad of new tech.” did not require substantial government subsidies and mandates to keep them afloat. They built a better mousetrap, and people wanted their product. EV’s selling point is manufactured guilt and government interference in free trade. Let EV companies stand on their own two feet and produce something consumers will flock to.

Every technological advance we have was subsidized by the US gov’t at one point or another.
Read Steve Jobs book. Most of the cell phone technology was subsidized or even invented by the US gov’t. Steve was smart enough to put it all together in one package.
The US gov’t is spending 52 billion dollars for subsidizing chip manufacturing.

EVs were on track to happen with or without gov’t subsidies. Might have taken longer to overcome the chicken-and-egg problem of EVs vs chargers, and there was certainly a boost when Georgia made the Nissan Leaf practically free for 2 year lease. Pretty clear Musk was going to push the tech with or without gov’t help, and if legislators want to throw billions his way it would be stupid to not take it.
