He’s male. He’s Scandinavian. He’s considered by some as “too masculine” and “too aggressive.” And now, he might be getting canned.
No, I don’t mean me.
I’m talking about Victor E. Viking, who has been the mascot at Western Washington University in Bellingham for 99 years.
According to a report from June of 2021, WWU’s Legacy Review Taskforce is “concerned about the harm caused by asking all members of the Western community to identify with a figure that is potentially exclusive on the basis of both ethnicity and gender.”
Already, in December, the task force convinced the university’s Board of Trustees to dump the name of Huxley College of the Environment. The taskforce claims namesake scientist T.H. Huxley held “white supremacist values.”
Next in their crosshairs: the use of the mascot in the name of the Viking Union, the hub for student gatherings.
Why?
Why?
"The Task Force found names idolizing conquest as out of line with the university’s contemporary values around honoring local Indigenous communities. Task Force members who did not recommend renaming in this report proposed the building name be evaluated alongside the mascot by a separate committee."
Moving forward, its members were “unanimous in agreeing that the building name and mascot should be addressed and evaluated in some manner.”

You could name a sports team the Dodecahedrons, but that would be exclusive of other polygons and all genders. Very bad.

WWU should just put up a statue of Lenin and call themselves the Bolsheviks.

Utes, Seminoles, Chippewas, Illini, Braves......
What’s wrong with any of these mascots? The purpose is clearly not to insult the people’s named but to honor them for their warrior virtues.
As per a vintage South Park episode, they had to vote from these choices:
A douche nozzle.
A turd sandwich.
Or how about the choice made by a California university:
The Banana Slug.
Maybe we can pay tribute to the Democratic Socialists:
The Cockroach.

Doesn’t every politician claim they are going to go to a center of power and “fight” [and bully]? Why can’t they all just get along?
Then they can start playing Sarcasti Ball.
Team sports allow people to exhibit antisocial war-like behavior under a carefully constructed set of rules. Deception is allowed, overpowering without mercy is allowed, double teaming is allowed, taunting and humiliation is allowed.
There is no reason that the mascot of these teams should not be allowed to reflect this anti-social activity.
Why people like to watch anti-social behavior is another matter.

I’m not sure it can be stopped at this point without serious intervention and perhaps a complete societal collapse. You would think publicly laughing at them would get their attention.
We had better just go ahead and just burn all of the history books and erase history because we are never going to be able to celebrate any culture or people ever.
Indigenous people is a pretty slippery label to put on group because you will be hard pressed to find any people anywhere on the planet that have not displaced another people at some time in history.
Conquest is a fact of life. It happens everywhere. People move from place to place and if they can push out the people living there they will, by force if necessary.
War, conquest and slavery have existed since before history began and they still exist. It isn’t nice but it is a fact.
These politically correct deconstructionist are doing a very similar thing. They are displacing our culture and replacing it with their idealistic politically correct culture. They are doing it by the force of imposed guilt and shouting down dissenting opinions.
At least the Vikings were straight up about what they were doing with violent conquest. They didn’t impose undeserved guilt upon their victims for the deeds of their ancestors.
So even if it were an African guy standing around with his spear it would have to go on account of it being exclusively one sort of person?

How was this group of Snowflakes constituted? If I were an alum of WWU and they make this change, my checkbook would be permanently closed to them.
