Can anyone explain why coyotes populations haven’t dropped. In the mid west coyotes usually eat the organs.
As a habit. I find and keep any slugs that don’t exit the body. My state only allows deer slugs from a shotgun.
What about most deer here are harvested with bow or crossbow.
Lastly, my state does not allow buckshot.
Copper got so expensive, used to use copper loads.
So all these factors and my state has the eagle population growing by leaps and bounds.

Wouldn’t lead shot or pieces of a shattered bullet pass right through any animal which ate it?

I heard that lead in the environment from now phased out leaded gasoline remains the largest source of lead pollution.

“my hands would be black from handling lead , lead poisoning is bs”

Lead is not dangerous if you touch it. Drinking it or breathing in lead dust will mess you up

"...... last year it was announced that the population of the fabled predator has quadrupled in the last dozen years, according to a recent survey by the US Fish and Wildlife Service."

..... So .... Apparently the Bald Eagle population is actually UP 400% Nationally .... Except in the Northeast where the population is suddenly down ..... Find it hard to believe a sudden drop in the Population could be attributed to Northeastern Hunters ..... Heck .... Do the Hunters suddenly have a hardon to use Extra Super Leaded Industrial Sized Rounds or something??? Then after the hunt they actually leave all of the meat just lying around for predators???

...... Yes they have found a few poisoned birds ..... But ..... Any chance the population may have found new nesting areas instead of this scenario? Remember .... The Nartional population is actually UP 400%

Note the really weird premise: Drop in the rate of growth.

In other words, the population is still going up, just the rate of growth is a mere 6% less, probably well below the margin of error.

This is not science. It is pure advocacy.

I’m not the one who makes the rules. In our state you have to use lead free shot when hunting waterfowl. That’s why they have bismuth shot.

Don’t blame me, I am just explaining why state legislators make those laws.

Sounds like BS if I ever heard it. I’ll never forget going gold-panning in the rivers in Northern California. We found so much lead shot it was ridiculous. I bet eagles eat plenty of fish that swim in those rivers.

Not only that, lead shot hasn’t been used in decades.

“I thought eagles were birds of prey, not scavengers.”

Bald eagles are basically scavengers. In parts of Alaska, there are so many of them, and they are such pests, locals consider them as bad as seagulls and crows. Pooping all over and causing a ruckus.

I focused on lead mobility in the environment for my MS thesis. Part of my research included studying gut piles and scavenging by raptor etc and the effect if any on ingested lead. The remainder of my thesis work dealt with lead migration on/ from small arms firing ranges(SAFRs).

One study I referenced was done by the Army medical command on lead pellet ingestion by birds, the study used quail. Quail were fed lead pellets taken from shotshells and the birds were x-rayed at routine intervals to determine how long the lead stayed in the gut. Also, blood was drawn at intervals to determine lead accumulation and finally, fat biopsies were taken at the conclusion to again see if and how much lead accumulated in the bird.
One bird died during the study which lasted several weeks, from stress most likely.

All lead pellets were excreted within 24 hours of ingestion and no measurable blood lead levels were noted. The control group and the test group has indistinguishable fat results, no lead.

Also, California studied condors, hawks and owls in the wild that were noted to have scavenged gut piles. Gut piles were x-rayed and lead fragments were found, as one expects from soft nosed lead cored bullets. This study was pre-lead free bullet time. While some birds had lead ( and glass and plastic) in their guts via a-ray, blood levels again were negligible and even the known General populations had some lead- seems that Galena, a mineral form of lead, was a common selection of pebbles in the birds gut. Some lead is found in nature. Duh.

Another thing, metallic lead in nature quickly reacts with rainwater and minerals around it and in many environments, a reaction occurs, which, interestingly forms a coating on the lead that is completely neutral in any known stomach or gut chemistry. Lead pyrophosphate. Of course, other products can occur too, lead oxides, which are semi-soluble in stomach acid but these oxides are not often associated with surface water reactions and thereby an uncommon sourxe of ingested lead.

Once again, the science tells one thing, the paid for agenda demands another....

Yes, they admit the population has had a “robust” increase. They think it should be up by 406% instead of 400% so that is a decline of 6%. Same way the Federal budget is calculated.

I am not kidding.

I did not realize that the leading edge of the electric generating windmills are made of lead.

When those damn obscenities chop up a bald eagle there is not crime nor fine. Let a duck land on a pond a few miles away that is contaminated by a small oil spill and the fines are massive.
