Why Spanish-language voting ballots are critical for democracy, advocates say

As the midterm elections approach later this year, some states and jurisdictions have required voting ballots to be made available in other languages besides English.

The Latino population continues to grow in the United States and some counties have mandated that ballots in Spanish are available at polling sites.

However, Spanish and non-English ballots are not required across the nation, though some advocates say that multilingual ballots are critical for democracy.

"We need to have bilingual ballots, bilingual material across the country, it should be a national requirement and a national norm," said Domingo Garcia, the national president for the League of United Latin American Citizens.

"When we look at the language barrier, it is voter suppression, right? It is discriminatory against eligible citizens who ... have the right to access ballots," said League of United Latin American Citizens Chief Executive Director Sindy Benavides.

Benavides said the need for ballot materials in Spanish include a need for other voting resources, such as interpreters, bilingual ballot directors and even flyers that can influence voter turnout.

Oh, fer Gawdsake. Next, we’ll have to have ballots printed in as many languages as there are translators in a big blue city hospital.

Since Hispanics are coming to us in droves, I can appreciate that.

Except those who want to join us, probably WANT to speak the language of America.

Uh, here in California that’s the norm.

Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian, Tagalog...the list is endless.

The poll workers are usually a 50/50 split because “we need to be here to speak to our people when they come to vota”.

This initiative is quite simply an effort to take over the US by the hyper aggressive Mexican invasion cheerleaders.

They have Biden and his buddies on their side so now’s the time to strike. Trump made them sit down and be quiet for four years, but they helped to burn that down in Arizona. And California, where they work relentlessly to steal elections in the former Republican bastions like Orange County.

SCOTUS can’t properly read a constitution written in English.

Laws translated into other languages will just mess things up furthur.

I’m sick of the medicare paperwork coming in ten different languages.
Really.
If you paid into medicare while you worked then you 100% read English.

This crap must stop.

We need voter ID and English only ballots.

Make English the Official language to do business with the various governing agencies in the US. No exceptions. Ballots, license forms, tax forms, etc... English ONLY.

Only US Citizens allowed to vote in US elections. No hyphenated/dual Citizenship stuff either. Either you completed the steps to BECOME an American, or you were born here and owe no allegiance to any other Nation.

No exceptions. Make it a violation of the Oath of Office to try changing this and make the penalty for violation of same a 10 year stint in Leavenworth regardless of Office held.

If you cannot speak english, you are not informed enough to vote here. The very idea is absurd. Imagine if I lived in Mexico and could not speak english. How informed of a voter would I be?

Make that if I lived in Mexico and couldn’t speak Spanish. How informed of a voter would I be? Also, it pretty much indicates you are an illegal alien.
Kids growing up in America and not ever learning English is exceedingly rare.
Maybe a few exceptions get turned away. But for every one of those there will be a thousand illegitimate votes prevented.

NO way. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say we have to provide multilingual ballots. If you can’t read the ballot, you shouldn’t be voting.

Not all Latinos and Latinas speak Spanish, a goodly number of them speak Portuguese instead.

Donald Trump’s name in Spanish is “Donald Trump.” Is there anything else they need to know?
