Countless news reports during the past year have bemoaned the increasing hostility people are expressing towards each other in their everyday interactions. We have seen this lack of civility and respect come to a boil locally as well, especially towards Black women.
This past week, Chicago Teacher’s Union President Jesse Sharkey said Mayor Lori Lightfoot was “relentlessly stupid” in her positions during negotiations of the dispute between the Chicago Public Schools and CTU.
We see this at the national level too.
No vice president in American history has endured more ferocious criticism than Vice President Kamala Harris. President Biden has said Harris has his full confidence, and he has given her high-profile assignments. Yet she has faced constant behind-the-scenes gossip, including stories about staff members resigning, and negative anecdotes from sources who won’t speak on the record.
In all of these instances, the common thread is that Black women are constantly challenged. They have had their intelligence, leadership, or commitments questioned, as if there is nothing they can do that is right.
This disrespectful behavior is especially disheartening as we continue to battle a pandemic that has disproportionately harmed communities of color.
It’s time to do better and that should start with Black women. Let’s listen to them more, respect their views, and change the discourse in this country for the better.

Yes.......................
When they are deserving of respect, they shall get it.
They in general are not, so they do not.
It is that simple.
Harris has brought this on herself. I have never seen anything like it from an interview point of view.
“They have had their intelligence, leadership, or commitments questioned, as if there is nothing they can do that is right.”
Sort of like your fellow lamestreams did to Donald J. Trump for four years. Libbies think Trump deserved the criticism; many think people like Lightfoot also deserve the criticism they get. See how that works?
Note to the Alderman: Black female leaders that are incompetent and polarizing, like Mayor Lightfoot and Senator Harris get criticized. Other Black female figures that are accomplished and display more common sense, like Condoleeza Rice and Candice Owen, are more or less admired. See how that works?
Ironic, isn't it?
It is amusing to see these women be treated like everyone else—yet, we are supposed to feel bad for them when they cannot answer pretty simple questions.
Perhaps, if they decided to answer something they did not know with, “I don’t know the answer to that off the top of my head. Instead of giving you a wrong answer...I will have my staff get back to you this afternoon on that.”
And then...have their people get back to them.
Instead, they get angry or respond with some gibberish that makes them look as stupid as they are.
Not all black women are stupid. But the ones in question here, sure appear that way.
I will show disrespect to ANYONE displaying irresponsible, immoral judgement and behavior, regardless of gender or color.
Wonder if those editorial writers have the same empathy and sympathy for incompetent physicians, teachers, mechanics, plumbers, engineers etc. They in a patronizing manner want “black women leaders” to be a privlidged protected class immune to criticism. Sorry but rational and decent people have no tolerance for deleterious nonsense.
This disrespectful behavior is especially disheartening as we continue to battle [an agenda-driven press].
Corrected, but I'm sure they already wrote a similar op-ed about Trump. Yeah, right.
It’s time that the entire cadre of elected office holders, including the President, realize and acknowledge that they are the hired help of the citizenry. THAT is way more important than any concern over hurting the feelings of anyone in office.
BS! Dan Quale.
I have no problem with women leaders of any color. I have a big problem with anyone who preaches collectivism and Communist tryranny. A very, very, big problem.
They aren’t disrespecting a black woman, they’re disrespecting an idiot Democrat.
Yep. My first reaction to this was that (for example) Kamala has NO RESPECT for me or anything I believe in, nor has she done anything unrelated to me, that I find worthy of respect. So... I guess they can go back to the 0bama days and say we are all just racist or whatever.
Opinion: Promote or vote based on merit and the issue vanishes.
Wasn’t Condoleeza Rice a black woman? I don’t remember the Sin-Times (LOL) giving deference to her opinions.
What a bunch of BS.
As usual, no mention of the (few) black (UNCAPITALIZED, THANK YOU) women who are conservative. I guess they are never subjected to “disrespect”. Or they don’t exist.
Never mind the stupid canard about wages. Of COURSE they “make less” - because like women in general, they have lesser jobs. Apples to oranges. Try comparing people in the same job status.
High profile black women can kiss my Lily white butt!!
I guess we can now only disrespect white Republicans - all others are off-limits to criticism...
