Biden Administration Plans To Build Wind Farms To Power 10 Million Homes

The Biden administration laid out an ambitious plan Wednesday for government-funded wind farms along the east coast, which it said would sustain millions of Americans’ energy needs.

Multiple federal agencies are planning to collaborate on the project, which will be completed by 2030, Interior Department Secretary Deb Haaland said during a renewable energy conference in Boston on Wednesday. Overall, at least 30 gigawatts will be produced by offshore wind farms by decade’s end.

“The Interior Department is laying out an ambitious roadmap as we advance the Administration’s plans to confront climate change, create good-paying jobs, and accelerate the nation’s transition to a cleaner energy future,” Haaland stated.

“Together, we will meet our clean energy goals while addressing the needs of other ocean users and potentially impacted communities,” she continued. “We have big goals to achieve a clean energy economy and Interior is meeting the moment.”

The farms would produce enough energy, Haaland added, to support more than 10 million homes by 2030, the Associated Press reported.

The U.S. wind sector currently has a total capacity of 118 gigawatts, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Roughly 3% of the nation’s total energy is produced by wind farms, additional government data showed.

“We are working to facilitate a pipeline of projects that will establish confidence for the offshore wind industry,” Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Director Amanda Lefton said in a statement.

Wind development in the Tehachapi Pass, California, began in the early 1980s by James Dehlsen and Zond Corporation. The first set of wind turbines installed were of American-made Storm Master brand, however they proved troublesome and eventually had to be replaced. Dehlsen turned to Danish-built machines later, which now make up the majority of the turbines at the pass. The area hosts a multitude of wind farms, comprising one of California’s largest wind resource areas.
The dead birds must be counted in the tens of thousands. One finds no raptors in the Tehachapi

I have no idea what Obeia is or how to get any. Not surprising
though, my range of ignorance is very broad and encompasses many subjects.

There is a difference between GigaWatt of coal/nuke and Gigawatt of solar/wind.
While coal/nukes work about 90% of the time (there are scheduled maintenance and repairs too), the solar/wind works like 20% of the time.
1 GW of installed nuke is equivalent of 0.9 GW of steady power, while 1 GW of wind is equivalent to about 0.2 GW steady power. You need about 5x installed power to get the same real power.

Yeah, I thought that was a poor choice but in hindsight probably a poke in the eye to pipeliners. Just like bullies.

The gas grid froze just like the industry professionals told them it would. The PUC and ERCOT both were told in 2008 and again in 2011 to winterize the power plants and the gas grid including the gas well heads they did none of that. As a result 45,000 megawatts of thermal power went off line and half the Texas gas supply froze on the first night. Wind was only forecasted to be 8,000 MW and it still made 4,000 which kept the lights on for some. Had PUC and the TXRRC listened to the professionals and hardened the gas grid those 45,000 megawatts would have been available it would have been irrelevant if wind made a single watt since those 45 gigawatts easily cover the total demand at that time. Texas has 80,000 megawatts of power capacity during the winter months losing half of it due to thermal plants dropping off line is what caused the black outs. But hey don’t let facts get in the way of a good hissy fit.

“...the entire south coast of Cape Cod should be lined with huge windmills and that the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard should be surrounded by them.
Same goes for the waters off of Malibu and Fairfield County,Connecticut.”

I never understood Windmill Farms out at Sea when electricity produced by wave action (as the Dutch use) works so much better in that particular environment.
