'The deaths that we're seeing now are still from Delta': CDC chief says the Omicron variant is NOT responsible for the 1,700 daily Covid deaths in the US

The United States is currently averaging 1,716 deaths per day from Covid, and Dr Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), blames the Delta variant - not Omicron - for causing them.

Walensky said at a news conference Wednesday that the slight increase in deaths over the past two weeks - up 10 percent - are attributable to the little circulation left of the Delta variant, not Omicron.

According to most recent data released by the CDC, the Omicron variant makes up around 98 percent of sequenced cases, with Delta making up just under two percent.

As a result of the highly infectious variant taking over, cases in the U.S. have rocketed in recent weeks. In two weeks, new daily cases have increased from around 235,269 per day to 750,515 per day - a 184 percent jump.

Deaths have not followed though, mainly due to the mild nature of the Omicron variant when compared to other strains. The small growth in deaths that has occurred could be entirely separate from the recent surge being experienced nationwide.

"We may see deaths from Omicron but I suspect that the deaths that we're seeing now are still from Delta," Walensky said.

She noted that investigations into the number of Covid deaths being caused by Delta versus the Omicron variant may take some time.

The Delta variant was the dominant strain in the U.S. for much of the latter half of 2021.

There might be a test to differentiate from the supposed variants, but I doubt they are doing it. I believe they are labeling vaccine deaths as covid deaths.

There are such tests, but not simple to administer like the basic positivity tests. Instead they take representative samples and extrapolate those figures to the wider population. Not perfect, but good.

What Laboratories Should Know:

There are no authorized, cleared, or approved diagnostic tests to specifically detect SARS-CoV-2 variants (Omicron or other variants). Currently, COVID-19 tests are designed and authorized to check broadly for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, not for specific variants.

The Omicron variant has a deletion in the spike (S) gene (Δ69-70). Some molecular tests with multiple genetic targets include a target covering the portion of the S gene where the deletion occurs. The presence of this mutation can result in an S-gene target failure (SGTF, also referred to as an S-gene drop out). The S-gene target will fail (return as negative) while other targets are expected to remain positive in the presence of this virus. SGTF can signal the need for sequencing to characterize the variant in a specimen.

SGTF has been observed in other variants and thus is not specific to the Omicron variant

When one can refer to the sometimes “beloved” CDC and find information such as this, those who cite the CDC as secular gospel ignore Data such as this. This would include all the previous “variants” breathlessly announced in past months.

Continuing the citation: “Results regarding the presence of the Omicron variant, or any other variant, should not be reported back to patients or providers and cannot be used for diagnostic purposes.”

There is no test..my sister’s entire household got the china virus..they paid 250 bucks a piece to get a test result within an hour..she called back wanting to know what variant they had and was told there is no way to find out

It’s not exactly a test that will give immediate information, but there is genomes sequencing of representative samples on the assumption that proportions of variants would be roughly the same at any point in time.
Severe and fatal cases would be easiest to get samples from. Israel also has found Delta to be a higher proportion of serious cases.

Once again, do they distinguish “with Covid” from “from Covid”. If so, then how?

If not, using the same criteria, I’d estimate that there are about 5500 deaths per day “from the vaccines” (gasp), since that’s roughly how many died “with the vaccines”. Either be consistent, or lose credibility.
