President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov wants to extinguish the flames of the “Gates of Hell” – a gas crater that has been blazing for decades.
The site, also called “Door to Hell,” is located in the middle of the desert about 160 miles north of the capital, Ashgabat, and has become an attraction for the country’s few visitors.
The hellish hole, which measures 190 feet wide and 70 feet deep, was formed in 1971 following a Soviet Union gas drilling collapse, according to Turkmen news site Turkmenportal.

Wow
Here in PA we ave Centralia.
Those coal veins have been burning for decades.
And just like Centralia, that “Gates of Hell” won’t be able to be put out.
“ President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov”
This, this is why Scrabble doesn’t allow proper nouns
He answers to “Mike.”
Haha. Reminds me of tech support on the phone. A guy with an Indian accent comes on and says ‘My name is Dave and I’ll be helping you today.’
What kind of SICK couple names their kid “Gurbanguly”. It is really too hard to call him Mike, or John?
Saw a documentary on this, not happening, at least according to the findings of the documentary.
Fuel air explosives or a small nuke would do. Putin can help out by dropping one on it.
Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov
“Bo” for short.
5.56mm
Why put it out?
Use that heat to create electricity. One way is to heat salt (it’s a desert) to operate a steam generator.
Yeah, there’d be a power line involved to get that electricity to where it needs to go, but it’s a “free” energy source.
Same as the A Hole man with a distinct Hindu accent who calls all hours of the day & says he is from “US MEDICARE”
On Friday, he called just after 6 AM !!!!
Hey, that’s my name too.
Whenever I go out the people always shout,
“There goes Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov...dahdahdahdahdahdahdah”
“And just like Centralia, that “Gates of Hell” won’t be able to be put out.”
It can be put out but Centralia can not.
1. Drill down to the producing formation, it may take several drillings to different locations in the formation.
2. Pump heavy drilling fluid into the formation which will then start bringing it up into the old well bore and eventually the hydrostatic pressure will be greater than the formation pressure and it will stop.
3. Pump cement into the old bore hole.
A lot of cement and drilling fluid and expenses will be involved. Thus what we really have is a cost benefit question. Is the cost of the lost gas greater than the cost of killing the old well? It might be cheaper to just let it burn.
My thoughts as well. Right now its not bothering anyone. If you put it out all that gas will go strait into the atmosphere. Which is dangerous and really worse for the environment.
Where’s Greta Thunberg
There’s your global warming, right there
