Omicron could be even less deadly than flu, scientists believe in a boost to hopes that the worst of the pandemic is over.
Some experts have always maintained that the coronavirus would eventually morph into a seasonal cold-like virus as the world develops immunity through vaccines and natural infection. But the emergence of the highly-mutated Omicron variant appears to have sped the process up.
MailOnline analysis shows Covid killed one in 33 people who tested positive at the peak of the devastating second wave last January, compared to just one in 670 now. But experts believe the figure could be even lower because of Omicron.

Omicron deaths might be as low as 1% (or 1/100) of Delta caused deaths.

What we are witnessing is the natural evolution of a coronavirus to the common cold.

No, they did not determine any such thing. They sequenced the genome and Omicron is SARS-nCov2 with, IIRC, 46 mutations. It does, however, appear to be relatively harmless.
Nowadays, with so much agenda laden news reports, it’s wise to ignore it all and look only at numbers. They won’t be 100% pure, but as long as criteria are consistent, their trends will say things.
Back in January of 2021, I watched the US Covid Death Count begin to descend. It did this before any vax was widely distributed. But even more important, the slope of that descent did not steepen as vax became widespread.
The slope of descent of daily death count maintained for a few weeks and then, in a shock, as vax totals increased, that slope of daily deaths became shallower, not steeper.
Go look at the graphs. Don’t believe me or anyone else.
In June we had the arrival of Delta. The timing on predominance is in some doubt, but it doesn’t look like it aligns well with the sharp increase in the July/August timeframe (a time when vax was very densely present among the prime targets, the old).
But regardless, upwards the daily death count ramped, peaked sometime around late Sept and then descended. And then, the descent stopped, early November, reversing to rise — and every day of this there was 1) more vax immunity and 2) more people with recovery immunity. The virus doesn’t care about either. Daily deaths headed upwards.
The holidays have corrupted the data a bit, as they did last Dec/Jan, but the allegedly mild Omicron seems to have an upward ramp in daily deaths as of early Jan.
Conclusion: All rosey scenarios are crap. All gov’t measures are crap. Mandates likely are crap. Freedom of mandates are crap. The only thing that has worked can be seen in NYC. They have had zero Excess Deaths since April 2020. What did they do? 30% office building occupancy. They got the hell away from each other. Many left town. Many don’t go into town. Emptying cities will maybe destroy society? Don’t care. I just see the numbers.
It’s hard to get deaths if there’s no one there to breathe virus.

Too early to tell how dangerous it is but here in NJ cases have gone through the roof, now in the 25-30,000 per day up from 1-2000 per day and daily lab confirmed deaths have risen dramatically from an average 10-15 per day through the fall to 75-100 per day this week.
It’s just the flu, Bro. Oops… I mean it WAS just the flu; now it’s a cold, Bro.

No, we don’t know that yet. We don’t even know all of the long-term effects of the other variants. It *seems* to be mild to harmless, so I’m hopeful, but time will tell.
