If she earned it why not, we’ve had women base commanders, sex should not be a factor. You can just answer Yes, Captain and leave gender out. By the time they reach this rank in a no war era they are about 40-45.
According to her bio she completed Navy Nuclear Power School: Link
Yes, it is and has been for some time. A aviation squadron commander will be given command of an amphib or supply ship. If that command goes well, they are in line to command a carrier. In the old days the aviator had to have commanded a fighter or attack squadron. Now, any time of aviation command is considered acceptable.
“...Is she the very best person for the job?...”
That is always the question. So many selections these days are for reasons other than merit.
“Shouldn’t she have some nuclear expertise. What’s she going to do about a low neutron flux, for example?”
Listen to her Chief Engineer’s advice.
Like all executives (Trump vis a vis vaccines for instance) she’ll delegate outside her expertise.
I’d say the concerns revolve around her grasp of tactics, leadership qualities, and fighting spirit. Our carriers may well face a first-tier adversary over the next few years.
During her first Tac Eval, I was called up to the "Eagles Nest" to advise the Wing Commander on the action to take. Though I was just an Army 2nd LT, I was my battery's NBC Officer, and had the requisite training.
During my first Tac Eval, my recommendation to the Wing Commander met with his approval, overriding his Base Disaster Preparedness Officer, a Captain.
About 30 minutes later, I heard his voice boom out, "as long as I'm in command, I want that Army LT up here anytime there's an NBC input."
So I was summoned to the Eagles Nest, made my recommendation, and returned to my post. The new Base Commander questioned why I was up there, stating the presence of the Base DPO.
That was a huge mistake, and the Wing Commander dressed her down for several minutes. She stormed off, looking silly wearing a helmet and web gear. IIRC, she lasted about a year, then was shipped off to a desk job, far away from Hahn AB.
her bio and everything about her seems to be redacted, all except her education

Likely her training scores, as well as her promotions, are suspect and would not pass muster in the light of day.
Else she’s a ex-CIA spook who came in from the cold, joined the Navy and, after several tours on SEAL Team 6, went on to seek command of a large surface combatant, by pleading her case to the Joint Chiefs on her knees, or bent over in a prolonged bow, as the case maybe.
Every 28 days some small third world country is getting nuked... lol
Trained as a helicopter pilot, Bauernschmidt served with the "Wolfpack" of HSL-45 on the destroyer USS John Young and the "Warlords" of HSL-51 on the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk. She later served as executive officer and then commanding officer of the "Spartans" of HSM-70 on the aircraft carrier USS George H. W. Bush.
In September 2016 after completing nuclear power school, Bauernschmidt became the executive officer of USS Abraham Lincoln.
On 5 August 2019, she assumed command of the amphibious transport USS San Diego. On 19 August 2021, Bauernschmidt became the commanding officer of USS Abraham Lincoln.
Let’s just hope this isn’t a case of the Navy being “stylish”.
She reported to the “Spartans” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 70 in 2011, as the executive officer, deploying aboard USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. She assumed command of HSM-70 in June 2011, earning the 2011 Admiral Jimmy Thach and Captain Arnold J. Isbell awards for tactical innovation and excellence and the 2012 Battle Efficiency award. In 2013, she served with the U.S. State Department as the Senior Military Advisor to the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues, enhancing women’s peace and security through worldwide initiatives. She was then selected for Aviation Nuclear Officer program and upon completion, reported to the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) in September 2016 as the ship’s executive officer.
Bauernschmidt has accumulated over 3,000 flight hours in naval aircraft. Her personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy/Marine Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various unit, campaign and service medals.

Behind her back, she is known as BS
That is a problem indeed, as is the character of the society from which recruits come from in post-Christian America (not that I do not fall short and too often fail either).

And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens. (Ezra 9:6)
On the plus side, it’s difficult for a carrier to crash into a civilian cargo ship because of the support ships between it and the carrier.
Check if there were other more qualified candidates given their experience. Not a guarantee, but it sure would be an indicator of why she was chosen.
Agreed. I don’t see this as a good thing. Knew enough female aviators during my time in the military...and no, they didn’t impress me. I found women to be good officers and arguably decent commanders for non-combat roles but I didn’t meet any women aviators or officers who I thought would be competent squadron commanders, let alone carrier commanders, in combat!
The very best female officer I met was no more than average as a military officer. I tend to like female bosses in the civilian world but a combat unit is a very different animal. None of the women I met in the military were in any way qualified to lead in combat.
As the CO of an aircraft carrier, coming from an aviation background is almost a must-have requirement.
“took over command from Capt. Walt Slaughter “
He sure had the name for a military commander.
Anyone recognize the large, round award above her aviator wings? It’s not obvious to me.
