A Ryanair flight from Manchester to Faro in Portugal was forced to plunge 35,000ft in seven minutes to make an emergency landing in France following reports of a "fire on board".

The Ryanair flight, (FR4052) took off from Manchester airport shortly after 6.30pm on Monday but mid journey, it was forced to make an emergency landing in Brest, in western France, reported the Manchester Evening News.

It was pictured on the runway with fire crews in attendance, and reports have been made of a "fire" on board however this has not yet been confirmed....

...The aircraft could be seen to have plunged from its cruising height of 41,000ft to just 6,725, in seven minutes....

Good thing they didn’t start at 34,000 feet, eh?

This is not an accident.

During an emergency, pilots are trained to take the plane down to an altitude where everyone on board can breathe. The oxygen masks only supply air for a short time.

The title is hysterical and does not educate readers.

often thought about those anti-gravity flights that are out there. what is the formula for the effect?...

Rate of Descent?
Forward speed?

Wonder if the passengers got a taste of it??

About 7 miles of decent in 7 minutes, or 60 mph decent. So no zero gravity, if they did it smoothly.

This is probably best because if something is on fire, you don’t want it floating around the cabin or cargo bay.

I bet a few ears were popping with that descent.

Very different flight profile. Long arcing path for that.

Ryannair is not universally loved by the flying public. They're cheap...but that's about the only kind thing you can say about them.

In a plane that lost cabin pressure once.

Fast trip down to normal o2 levels

I did fly Ryannair since I was being cheap.

I will never fly Ryannair again after reading about this flight.

anti-gravity flights that are out there

To achieve a zero-g environment, the plane has to fly a parabolic arc where the rate of descent is described by the equation vertical velocity = starting vertical velocity - 32 ft/sec2 * time [in seconds]. starting at level flight, 10 seconds following this trajectory would give a vertical velocity downwards of 320 ft / second or 19200 ft per minute, which is getting towards the limit of what is controllable. It is also approaching what can be attained in subsonic controlled flight.

So, such weightless can only be achieved for very short periods of time - seconds.

An object that is dropped will in 10 seconds fall 1600 feet. In 20 seconds it will fall 6400 feet [it won't because you are now apporaching the speed of sound and air resistance become a dominant force limiting the velocity that can be achieved.

Obviously you learned that during the period of conventionally taught math or aerodynamics. Kudos.

One would think that they'd be subject to the same scrutiny...or maybe even tighter scrutiny...than British Airways,Lufthansa, etc by European regulators. Of course that wouldn't guarantee that they do everything by the book...just as US scrutiny of United doesn't guarantee it. But they're at least meeting minimum standards.

Your question - “often thought about those anti-gravity flights that are out there. what is the formula for the effect?...
Rate of Descent?
Forward speed?”

Simple. The speed of decent has to match the acceleration of gravity. In the case of planet Earth, the speed of decent must increase by 22 mph every second.
