Finland’s leaders say they will decide whether to join NATO despite warnings from Russia against joining the Western alliance, as the military standoff on Ukraine’s border has heightened tensions between Moscow, the US and Washington’s European allies.
“Finland’s room to maneuver and freedom of choice also include the possibility of military alignment and applying for NATO membership, should we ourselves so decide,” President Sauli Niinistö said in a New Year’s address over the weekend.
Niinistö also urged the European Union to become actively involved in curbing Russian aggression, saying: “In this situation, Europe cannot just listen in.”
Prime Minister Sanna Marin echoed Niinisto’s sentiments in her comments, saying Finland, which shares a border with Russia, will make its own security decisions.
“We have shown that we have learnt from the past,” she said. “We will not let go of our room for maneuver.”

Kiev keeps threatening to invade Donbass and the Crimean parts of Russia. So Russia moves some troops inside their own country, along their own border. That kind of crazed activity seems utterly bizarre to DC. LOL
Yes Finland made it a hard commitment right from the start with Nazi Germany, that they would fight the Soviets only to their former border, only to reclaim what the Soviets had taken.
The Nazis were the only ones with the capability, who were willing to help Finland. There was a famous picture at the time of the Finnish leader with Hitler - the Finn visibly disgusted with him.

Maybe Russia should join NATO too?

The Finns used the Nazis, in much the same way Franco did.
Another amazing thing about Finland. They took the Brewster Buffaloes that nobody else could do much with and flew them till the end of the war with fantastic results against the USSR. And Finn pilots even used the US Navy full deflection shooting technique.
Brewsters claimed 477 victories for the loss of 19 in combat.
Finns can throw a curveball.
If Russia gave back Finland the land it stole during WWII in exchange for Finland declaring it will not join NATO, that could be an acceptable deal.
Finland won’t do that...they’re already knee deep in the UN and European Union....and have already begun certain accommodations to Nato. They all just keep poking the bear. Putin will one day act against Nato’s expansion into it’s border countries because once they take over they set up bases and missile possibilities.
No doubt the Nato plan is to surround Russia....and for that matter China as well.
“True enough, on the other hand, Finland was lucky Stalin left them alone as WW II drew to a close. The Red Army in 1945 was not the Red Army of 1939. Zhukov and the boys would have crushed Finland in a week or two.”
Finland was already out of the war by late 1944 and I believe Stalin himself said that Berlin was the goal and not Helsinki. There was also the fact that Finland was the only member of the Axis that the US was neutral with during the entirety of the war and there was notable sentimental support for Finland amongst the US population.
That’s a one-sided view of Finland’s participation; they allied with Germany to re-take the territory seized in the Winter War (when the Western ALlies did nothing to help the new country of Finland). When Hitler wanted Finland’s help at Leningrad, they wouldn’t participate.
The USSR understood the difference; at the end of the war Finland was the only European country bordering them that wasn’t occupied/reduced to a Soviet satellite.
Finland likes to switch sides....or as he puts it...”Manuvers” to which ever side assists their own agenda.
I suspect had Sweden not maintained its neutrality Post-War, it could have been a different story for Finland.
Holy shit, you're even regurgitating the "self defense" and "on our own territory" bullshit from several months ago from Russian TV. Yeah, the Russkies are just moving shit along their own border and in their own territory, nothing to see here! But God forbid NATO deploy 8000 additional troops to Romania, nowhere near the Russian border, then it becomes evidence of an imminent invasion of Moscow!
Screw you, Putinist troll!
Finland did what they had to do because the Western democracies wouldn’t help; in fact, they allied with one of the few monsters in history who killed more people than Hitler.
Our inactivity to raise a finger to fight communism as it reared its ugly head in Europe in the 20s and 30s permanently tarnished our reputation as “defenders of democracy”; populations instead had to turn to authoritarian/military governments to save them from the fate of Ukraine, eastern Poland, the Baltics, and eastern Finland. The Axis accomplished the impossible by uniting most of Europe against the USSR; they recruited nations that advocated democracy but faced communist takeovers (without any Western aid).
Britan and France went to war to defend Poland in 1939, but never declared war against Stalin as he took eastern Poland (and the other countries mentioned above); at the end of the war, ALL of Poland (along with the countries mentioned above) was ruled by Stalin - all Britain and France gained was the loss of their own empires as the colonized people saw both humiliated by smaller yellow men from Japan.
“You Stalin’s great-grandchild?”
LOL ! Haven’t you come across that shit before ? The whole platoon has been squatting here for years.
