Betty White was a trailblazing animal rights activist

Betty White had a wild side.

The legendary “Golden Girls” star — who died Friday at age 99 — was a pioneering animal rights activist devoted to saving endangered species and improving conditions at the Los Angeles Zoo.

The beloved actress worked for decades to champion animals in her charity work, along with publishing a book on the subject and starring in the nature-boosting 1971 show “Pet Set.”

“Betty White demonstrated a lifelong commitment to helping animals in need, including dedicated support for local shelters and animal welfare endeavors, fiercely promoting and protecting animal interests in her entertainment projects, and personally adopting many rescued animals,” said Matt Bershadker, ASPCA president and CEO.

“Betty was a constant and compassionate advocate for vulnerable animals across the country, and will be greatly missed.”

Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association president Tom Jacobson added, “Her work with [the zoo] spans more than five decades, and we are grateful for her enduring friendship, lifelong advocacy for animals, and tireless dedication to supporting our mission.”

After White’s death on Friday, fans took to Twitter to thank her for being a friend, to animals.

“A trailblazer. An original. And a truly kind soul. May she be forever surrounded by four-legged animals in heaven,” one fan tweeted.

Another added, “Everyone loved Betty White for a million different valid reasons, but I’d like to celebrate her decades of activism, advocacy and devotion on behalf of animals and animal welfare, something she learned as a child and made a central part of her life. #RIP”

I’d like to see Zoos done away with. It’s cruel...lions and elephants etc etc in what can only be described as prisons for life.

I went to a zoo outside Carlsbad NM. It contained only animals that could no longer survive in the wild.

Some zoos are good, some are terrible.

Plus when a person gets attacked because they try to pet them, they dont shoot the idiot, they shoot the animal.

Have no problem with that. It’s a decision that had to be made.

Zoos are what raise awareness of the animal kingdom

I spent the day recently with a man who has spent 30 years trying to save the very endangered Okapi

Part of his work is spent making sure the world knows about this animal because most people never heard of them

Any zoo in the world that wants one, has to go through him and his personal inspection and approval

How does someone who likes animals and doesn’t want them mistreated become an “animal rights activist”?

I guess only when they can no longer speak for themselves.

This focusing on animals is common in childless women.

Have you noticed how many women refer to themselves as their pet's "mom".

It happens with men as well, but not as commonly.

I wonder what her thoughts on Fauci’s beagles were. Sorry, too soon?

Have to agree with you. There are better ways to bring people to animals than cages and pens.

Too bad she didn’t care as much about unborn babies as she did about animals.

Have you seen women walking down the street pushing their dogs in strollers? It is quite strange.

She did have step children, in 1963, when she was 41, when she married Allen Ludden. But she chose not to have children, in order to put her career as an actress first.

"But I didn't choose to have children because I'm focused on my career. And I just don't think as compulsive as I am that I could manage both," White added

Ludden was her third marriage. She says she ended the first marraige after being asked to kill a chicken at her inlaws ranch, in 1946!

Her second husband wanted her to be a wife (and maybe mother?) first, but she wanted the career. End of marriage number 2.

Third time was the charm. By now she was 41.

The three step children were born in 1948, 1950 and 1952. The were roughly the age White would have been expected to have children if she had stayed married to her first husband. When she married Ludden, the step children were 15,13, and 11.

Doris Day was another very wealthy, very successful comedy actress who became involved with animal rights.
Maybe they worked together at some point.

All respect to White. She was fantastic at her craft.

This is something I don’t like…PETA and HSUS inspired communism.

Closing down zoos and circuses does what exactly?

Keeps all wild animals in their natural habitat where NO ONE CAN SEE AND APPRECIATE THEM FOR REAL.

Zoom and videos are no substitute.

More ignorance and less appreciation from all people not living where they do.
