I’m starting to lose track of how many people we’ve interviewed who have been arrested. The latest one is Cantopop singer and Hong Kong activist Denise Ho. She was arrested in Hong Kong today on charges of sedition, related to formerly being on the board of directors of Stand News, a pro-democracy HK media outlet.
Stand News has now suspended operations after several former directors, editors, and staff were arrested and their office was raided. Very similar to what happened to the pro-democracy Apple Daily months ago.
We met Denise in May 2019 at the Oslo Freedom Forum, where she made a speech about what was happening in Hong Kong and performed a song. This was before the big protests that summer. In our interview with Denise, she mentioned that there would be an anti-extradition law protest soon, and that she hoped people would show up. A million people did.

Anyone with half a brain knew that China wouldn’t keep its promises about Hong Kong. Or anything. It is a criminal State.
It means something else in Chinese, and she’s right now in jail, perhaps being tortured, killed or raped. So levity might not be appropriate.
On the other hand, it might be the only thing appropriate, defiance in the face of death and all that. So do what you wish.
The UK forgot to secure the treaty with consequences for its violation. The sun has set on their empire at last. Pitt, Disraeli, Churchill, Eden, et al.: Roll around in your graves. Nobody’s watching, so a waiver of British stiff-upper-lippitiness would not be remarked upon.

She’s interviewed in the video I linked, and notwithstanding the blown up photo, she’s quite petite and pretty, imho.
Churchill wouldn’t have been fool enough to trust them. Unfortunately most pols are more like Neville Chamberlain or John Kerry than Churchill or Teddy Roosevelt. Or Donald Trump. Weak, craven fools and cowards are the norm.
The treaty was negotiated by Margret Thatcher.
Respect for Thatcher falls several percentage points.
Sounds a lot like their version of the political blacklists in the 1940s and 1950s against communism. We did it to fight communism. They to fight democracy. Funny how things change but stay the same. And the Biden administration supports them.

You’re too generous. They’re corrupt, and merely posing as weak, craven or foolish. They’re just fine with what’s going on in Hong Kong, and hoping to do the same one day with their dissidents, or at least get paid well for their studious indifference.

Glad to hear it. Thanx. Says in the article you linked that she’s out on bail. That means they’re not done with her, whatever her supposed crime may be.
Churchill and Trump both understood the need to secure agreements with guarantees. FDR, and then Truman, unfortunately did not, and rejected his warnings. They trusted Stalin, and the world paid the price with an iron curtain that took 50 years to rust. It remains to be seen how long this one will take, and what the world will look like by then. I can only hope that Trump can destroy it before it solidifies, without the need for more endless proxy wars. He is the only good bet at this juncture. Foe is...well, a foe.
