China hoards over half the world's grain, pushing up global prices

DALIAN, China/TOKYO -- Less than 20% of the world's population has managed to stockpile more than half of the globe's maize and other grains, leading to steep price increases across the planet and dropping more countries into famine.

The hoarding is taking place in China.

COFCO Group, a major Chinese state-owned food processor, runs one of China's largest food stockpiling bases, at the port of Dalian, in the northeastern part of the country. It stores beans and grains gathered from home and abroad in 310 huge silos. From there, the calories make their way throughout China via rail and sea.

China is maintaining its food stockpiles at a "historically high level," Qin Yuyun, head of grain reserves at the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration, told reporters in November. "Our wheat stockpiles can meet demand for one and a half years. There is no problem whatsoever about the supply of food."

According to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, China is expected to have 69% of the globe's maize reserves in the first half of crop year 2022, 60% of its rice and 51% of its wheat.

Enough food to feed troops for invasions...

Good strategy when you’re planning to go to war with your two largest food suppliers.

Then China is pretty smart. Meanwhile, the US sanctions push countries into famine.

Hmmm, I wonder if China will win friends in those countries the US hopes to bend to their will by starvation if they share their hoarded supply.

I’m not concerned about rising food prices in the 3rd world. I’m concerned about why China might be stockpiling so much grain given that they cannot feed themselves and given that their 2 biggest sources of grain are in the Anglosphere......

"Enough food to feed troops for invasions..."

Sure, because, "310 huge silos" are not a target for attack.

I can't understand how our political and military leaders can't see this. Unless they truly are all bought and owned by the CCP.

The global elite Davos types who are trying to usher in global fascism with themselves at the top surely have no interest in begin dominated by the chinese instead.

It is interesting that The Economist, which has turned into a lefty, America bashing, blame-America publication, has a huge section this week calling for Americans to spill their blood and become the world's policemen again, so in that respect, the Euros get it. Can't believe they're less bought than, say, McTurtle and Pelousey.

“There is no problem whatsoever about the supply of food,” he said with his fingers crossed and a heavily armed, scowling PAP at his back.

Meanwhile due to shoddy construction, the rats and the mice were eating large in the grain an bean silos, not that anyone cared. Employees trap a few for lunch and take home dinner.

“I can’t understand how our political and military leaders can’t see this. “

The cadre that Russian leaders are drawn from is about 200 people, all of whom have a background in the intelligence circles. Other authoritarian countries are similar in that the people who end up running the place are in a cadre of potential leaders, usually from birth. So, those people are thinking strategically from their first school classes.

Now, you could argue that America is similar because we usually elect our leaders from related families. The Bushes, the Clintons, the Kennedys and even names that don’t resonate in your memory are often related to some famous families. But those people are not usually strategic thinkers. They are political thinkers...which is not the same thing.

Because of the way we elect our leaders we often end up with people in important positions whose only qualification is their parents knew the “right” people. When it comes to strategic thinking, they’re idiots.

Fortunately, America has near perfect geography, good institutions, like the military, and up until recently, a terrific economy. So, America can afford, usually, to have idiots run the place as we have strategic, economic and cultural depth.

Well I have studied our Government for 50 years and the history behind it and many in our Government have sold out long ago. A good example of this is the State Dept as as far back a the early 20th century many actors in that Government Dept were secret Communists or a favorite term I have is Fellow Travelers..Chinese influence is thick inside the US Government and has crept into the US Military Leadership..I for one do not see the United States winning a conflict with China.
