California is a neo-Confederate state with a “sick fixation” on ethnicity and race, historian and professor Victor Davis Hanson said in an interview with Breitbart News Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow.
California’s hemorrhaging of residents to states with more freedom and prosperity is exacerbating the state’s social stratification in terms of wealth, Hanson stated. He said the state’s volume of illegal aliens further amplifies the wealth divide.
“The middle class has left,” he said. “About ten million people left California in the last 40 years, and we know where they went. They went to Nevada, Idaho, Texas, Florida, Tennessee. We have half of all the undocumented illegal aliens in the country. Twenty-seven percent of Californians were not born in United States, whether they’re legally [here], or residents, or citizens.”
Hanson characterized California’s polarization based on wealth as resembling the Antebellum South’s racial segregation.
“That is the nexus: great wealth, great poverty. But the way I look at it is — they would not want to hear this — but just think of the old Confederacy or the Antebellum South — one party, Democratic — this is a one-party state. They had Big Cotton. We have Big Tech. Big Tech runs the whole state, just like Big Cotton [ran the Antebellum South].”
He continued, “The Old South, we had the plantationist class. [Today], these are the people that live in Woodside or Berkeley Hills or Palo Alto, then you had everybody else: black slaves, and you had the poor, what they called ‘white trash.'” There was no middle class. When I go to Stanford, I see all these wealthy kids there, and then I go along El Camino, everybody’s living in a trailer.”
“I go to the Apple or Google or Facebook campuses, and people are living in the streets that work there,...”

I didn't think about Commiefornia losing all of their middle class.
California consists of a few tech and entertainment billionaires, a LOT of government employees, and illegals.
He forgot Arizona
Buckeye has 45,000 white people who are probably all from the LA burbs but driven out by the illegals
But it’s funny because he just now noticed what we all have been living for the last 30 years
Visited friends in southern CA back in the mid 80s. They told me the same thing. There is no middle class in CA. Just rich and poor.
There actually was a Hollywood Plantation in Georgia.
Victor Davis Hanson noticed decades ago. He is at heart and in reality a 5th generation Californian and Central Valley farmer (in addition to being a great historian of American History). He couldn't fail to notice. It has been hitting him in the head every day.
BFL, thanks for posting!
Racial “segregation” in the South was invented after Lincoln's War, not before.
During the war, for example, blacks in the Confederate army typically fought in integrated units; it was the north that fought in segregated units.
I get it that Hanson wants to criticize California; nothing wrong with that. And what better brush-back pitch to a liberal than to accuse them of being “Confederates”.
Still, Hanson ought to think through his allegations. For accuracy's sake.
I knew someone would say that.
Fact is, 10 years ago he was downplaying the Invasion.
He may be 5th generation but he’s surrounded out there in Fresno by a bunch of the Nueva Darkies working for all his land holding brethern: he’s one of the landed class, just not really big. Which is why he can talk about it...the rest of them could give a crap as long as Los Indigeanos keep picking the grapes, pecans and mowing lawns.
There’s a rather good thread on twitter by a SF progressive
who is finally appalled at the destruction of her city.
‘We are allowing this insanity’: Liberal Michelle Tandler calls out progressive San Franciscans for enabling the policies destroying their own city
What she can’t get to is that progressive politicians make big promises to get elected and then loot society for short term personal gain. Progressive buys votes to maintain their power base.
I did 3 tours of duty in the San Francisco area, one 1976-8, one 1984-1988, and one in 1989-1991. It got demonstrably worse each time. Can’t imagine what it must be like to live in San Francisco now.

I think I know the answer to this paradox. Missing entirely in the above description is the attitude of the host, which by any historical standard can only be termed “indifferent.” California does not care whether one broke the law to arrive here or continues to break it by staying. It asks nothing of the illegal immigrant — no proficiency in English, no acquaintance with American history and values, no proof of income, no record of education or skills. It does provide all the public assistance that it can afford (and more that it borrows for), and apparently waives enforcement of most of California’s burdensome regulations and civic statutes that increasingly have plagued productive citizens to the point of driving them out. How odd that we overregulate those who are citizens and have capital to the point of banishing them from the state, but do not regulate those who are aliens and without capital to the point of encouraging millions more to follow in their footsteps. How odd — to paraphrase what Critias once said of ancient Sparta — that California is at once both the nation’s most unfree and most free state, the most repressed and the wildest.
Hundreds of thousands sense all that and vote accordingly with their feet, both into and out of California — and the result is a sort of social, cultural, economic, and political time-bomb, whose ticks are getting louder.
# we know where they went. They went to Nevada, Idaho, Texas, Florida, Tennessee.
The craphole in Austin is what you get when an area is infested with Californians.
The productive are leaving Cali, and the parasites, rich and poor, are staying. Looks like a win/win to me.

Sometimes I suspect that VDH is a bigoted neocon fool. Other times he removes all doubt.
The writers at Chronicles had him pegged years ago.
“They went to Nevada, Idaho, Texas, Florida, Tennessee. “
And Utah too, worse luck. They still vote like the totalitarian baby-murderers they are.
Progressives are racists. Period. Full stop.
California still has a large middle class.
Its just not as large as it should be and the trendline is going the wrong way. All this is by design.
Most of my friends left the state years ago, they had middle class jobs but could never, ever afford a house in California and that is the main reason why they left.
