The Los Angeles Police Department officer who opened fire on a suspect in a Burlington store in North Hollywood on Thursday has been placed on leave as officials investigate the shooting that killed a 14-year-old girl, CBS Los Angeles reports.
The investigation has been handed to the California Department of Justice under a new law that requires any deadly shooting at the hands of an officer — intentional or not — to be investigated by the state's attorney general.
Police responded to the store Thursday morning after several 911 calls reported possible shots fired. They encountered a suspect who allegedly attacked a woman with a heavy-duty bike lock, leaving her head and face bloodied.

They forgot to put “unless you’re Alec Baldwin”
The story is the child was with her mom, but was “found later”.
And Potter was not, cause she had absolutely no reason to be ...
I thought police are supposed to be trained and ready for these situations, not like a Victorian housewife.
Cop guilty? Depends...was the 14 year old white or black.
And Alec...he belongs in jail.
LAPD Chief of Police Michel Moore told CBS LA that one officer fired three rounds. The assault suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Daniel Elena Lopez, was shot in the chest and died at the scene. The girl, Valentina Orellana-Peralta, was in a dressing room when one of the bullets passed through the wall and struck her in the chest, killing her. According to The Los Angeles Times, she was there trying on dresses for her quinceañera with her mother.
The criminal was apparently assaulting and causing significant bodily harm to other customers and he needed to be stopped. In these situations, we ask police to do their best and balance the safety of everyone involved. It will be very unfortunate if an innocent bystander was found to have been killed in this process by a police bullet. However, outcomes like this will sometimes happen. This incident will be thoroughly investigated and any mistakes by the officers involved will be identified. At this point it is too soon to say whether the police are civilly or criminally at fault, and we should refrain from drawing premature judgements. The only guilt we can be confident about is that of the now deceased criminal who is ultimately responsible for this girl’s death.

Yes. The police couldn’t let him go around smashing people with a heavy lock, possibly killing someone. They did what they had to do and unfortunately a tragedy happened. Life is not clean.

The only way Alec will ever see the inside of a jail cell is to be a visitor.
Concur fully
Rule #4.

What legal jeopardy should the officer be in for violating rule number four?
We civilians are drilled that every round you fire has in a defensive shoot has a lawyer attached to it.
Not to bash cops, but a bit more responsibility on what they hit downrange when they miss their target is probably a good thing.
“What legal jeopardy should the officer be in for violating rule number four?”
Reckless endangerment and involuntary manslaughter sounds about right to me.

Then CCW holders in a defensive shooting should only be held to the same standard.
Instead, they are responsible, personally responsible, for where every single one of their bullets go.
Either cops need to be held to the same standard, or CCW holders should be allowed to only be held to the police standard. No double standards!
What a sensitive comment on a thread about a 14 year old girl being shot by the police while she was in a store dressing room.
