The blast at a Texas oil refinery early Thursday will probably push already high gasoline prices even higher — although not immediately.
The blast and resulting fire at the ExxonMobil plant in the Houston-area city of Baytown, Texas, injured at least four workers. The accident could hamper output at one of America’s largest refineries for months, weighing on gasoline supply at at time when US refining capacity has already been reduced, said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst for the Oil Price Information Service.
“They’re not going to have all systems go for a couple of quarters,” he said.
The average price for a gallon of regular gas now stands at $3.29, down 11 cents from a month ago, but still up $1.05 per gallon, or 47%, from a year ago. Gas prices have been a major factor in the rate of inflation hitting a 39-year high.
Kloza said he would not be surprised to see average prices rise to $4 a gallon in much of the country this spring and summer as the economy continues to recover and demand for gas increases. The limited supply of gasoline due to the loss of refining capacity in the United States and elsewhere will only help lift prices higher.
FWIW, GM Onstar has had that “capability” since 1997.
Gas lines may NOT be a good strategy for the mid term elections next fall.
That was my point. Grim but true.
My security system says that link is a very dangerous site.
Best I can find out, the unit that experienced the leak and fire was a naphtha hydrotreater. It seems doubtful that this will have any significant impact on production from this plant let alone the price of products in the marketplace.
For those who believe companies that operate oil refineries burn down parts of their plant to drive up prices: are you seriously nuts or what?
I’ve worked many years in oil refineries, no one wants to have anything to do with a fire in such a plant. These plants are incredibility complicated, massive, dangerous facilities. Inspecting and maintaining all the equipment, furnaces, pipes, vessels is an almost inconceivable job and these folks perform it so well. Fires and injuries are rare, but obviously not zero which is the desire of every company and employee.
Air conditioning! Which commielibs also want to take from us. Serves both their political and eugenics goals.
You’ll be looking or a l-o-n-g time; that won’t ever happen.
I did, you didnt understand.
In the proper context of this discussion, there are no such things as electric cars. That is an intentional misnomer.
There are networked computers that you may ride in.
The fed doesnt turn off all the chargers any more than the your provider turns off all electrical power when you dont pay your cellular bill.
To answer your second question, in reality there is nothing. Functionally the answer can be summed up as “Doritos”.
Coal is what fuels EV’s.
They can do the same with something as simple as a disease!
Oh yes they already are.
They can control us by simply closing all the highways and airports.
They can shut down all of our electricity.
40% of oil gets refined to make gasoline.
If we can put a huge dent in that number we will change the world.
I love the fact that EV’s are actually fueled by coal!
Unlike you I do not like giving energy power to Muslim nations
I enjoy the fact that EV’s are actually powered by coal.
An energy source that removes the power from your beloved Muslims
I live in Baytown. The Exxon-Mobil refinery covers 4,500 acres. This is a very, very small incident. Will have zero impact on gasoline prices.
Sort of like a pimple on an elephant’s butt
Haven’t seen the Venezuela prices sense the 50’s gas wars must be some of that good olds stuff.
“NIGHTTIME is when demand is LOWEST on the grid ....”
So I guess all the charging stations will be shut down during hot summer days?
Because electric cars still don’t go very far. And they go almost nowhere if one decides to run the A/C system.
Bring a tent and a cooler if one is traveling in summer. Wherever the car stops is where you will be staying for the night.
Petroleum = freedom. We can continue developing technologies, and supplementing with solar, but it won’t be going anywhere unless we greatly reduce population, greatly restrict travel, and greatly restrict personal consumption.
“Electric vehicles will allow the government greater control over peoples lives. They will just shut them off if they don’t like you. Or not let you charge.”
Yep. And they can shut off a credit card now, but one can still pay cash.
re: “So I guess all the charging stations will be shut down during hot summer days?”
At the moment you are appearing quite fact deficient; By your writing, I can tell you have NEVER seen an electricity demand curve plotted over a 24 hour period.
Come back when you have studied that facet of the electrical system.
Tell me about the range of a fully loaded electric SUV running A/C on a late July Texas afternoon.
California can barely keep their grid up during summer as it is. Do you think things will be fine if they add say 2MM electric cars on the demand side?
I think the graphic above says it all.
And I'm talking 'tech' waaaay above what you're thinking of.
Quick check of Tesla range says 350 miles.
That’s without A/C.
My SUV goes further than that with A/C blasting, and I can refuel at thousands of points along my journey.
There’s no comparison.
Gas/Diesel power equals freedom.
I am just surprised that a FReeper would be promoting the Enemy’s technology
