Greater Cleveland restaurants temporarily close, shift to takeout during COVID surge and staffing shortages

CLEVELAND, Ohio – As a record-breaking coronavirus surge rages in Ohio, local restaurants have been forced to reckon with the virus just days before Christmas.

Some eateries have closed their dining rooms and continue to offer takeout, while others have temporarily closed altogether, pausing their business until after the holidays are over or until the new year.

The Flying Fig in Ohio City is one of the restaurants that will remain open for takeout but has closed its dining room to customers. Owner Karen Small cited staffing shortages and coronavirus cases behind the decision.

“We had a few positive cases and it just did not seem like it was a good thing to be open,” Small said. “The weekend before last, we had one person test positive, then people were sick. They were testing negative, but they were really sick. The term everyone’s using is ‘abundance of caution.’ Just to keep the staff safe, and keep people safe in general.”

Due to COVID-19 cases in Flying Fig’s staff, Small said she was left with just one or two healthy people to run things this week.

“There comes a point where you can’t do what you do,” Small said. “The staffing just isn’t coming back. When you get in a situation like this, when you’re already running a kitchen team of four people and two or three go down, it doesn’t leave you with much.”

Other restaurants have cited restaurant staffing shortages as the primary reason behind the closing. Coupled with holidays and requests for time off, limiting service and closing up shop became natural next steps for many businesses.

That being said, it’s not a decision restaurant owners are making lightly. Small said she plans on reassessing Flying Fig’s situation next week, checking on staffers’ COVID-19 test results then.

“We just hope to be open as soon as we can,” Small said. “This should be a happy time of the year and it’s just putting a damper on everything right now. I just want people to have a good holiday season and hope we all get healthy again soon.”

We’ve noted which restaurants have closed through at least Dec. 25, or which ones have shifted to takeout-only service below. Some businesses will remain limited through the end of the year, and into early 2022, while others will reassess their situations after Christmas.

We recommend calling or checking individual restaurants’ websites for details, as situations continue to change rapidly in Cuyahoga County.

Nearly $100 billion at minimum has been stolen from Biden’s COVID-19 relief programs set up to help businesses and people who lost their jobs due to the pandemic, the U.S. Secret Service said Tuesday.

The estimate is based on Secret Service cases and data from Biden’s Labor Department and the Small Business Administration, said Roy Dotson, the agency’s national pandemic fraud recovery coordinator, in an interview. The Secret Service didn’t include Biden’s COVID-19 fraud cases prosecuted by the Justice Department....

Most of that figure comes from unemployment fraud. Biden’s Labor Department reported about $87 billion in unemployment benefits could have been paid improperly, with a significant portion attributable to fraud....

This is smoke and mirrors. Went to Wendy’s in Cleveland. Dining room closed due to “staff shortage”. That place is making more money now than with full staff. They don’t need to hire people to clean bathrooms, dining room, or staff registers. The place runs with fewer employees so the owner is making more profit. They even removed the garbage cans from outside so nobody has to empty them!

I’m getting pretty tired of hearing these places blame COVID when in reality they don’t want to hire more people.

I suspect most of the owners voted for the democrat taliban party.

It has nothing to do with abundance of caution except to her bank account.

There’s labor shortage everywhere. Thanks to an experiment on universal basic income, millions of employees have left the work force. Let’s go Brandon!

Charge $1 per test and the number of people in line will drop by over 50%.

Of course it is.

Given the OSHA pending mandate, etc.

Better to shut it down than have some employee sue you.

So much bad in what is going on.

Much fast food in the Cleveland area has continued to be drive thru only since last year. Actual restaurants have been unable to maintain staffing levels and some have kept reduced hours as a result. One exception has been Chick-fil-A, who seem to be able to keep good people and are open to walk-in customers.

Fast food places make more money with drive thru only. That’s why they are not opening dining rooms that must be cleaned, cash registered manned, etc.
