Rumors swirl that Manchin could defect from the Democratic Party after he sank Biden's Build Back Better spending plan

Sen. Joe Manchin's bombshell decision to sink President Joe economic agenda has reignited rumors that he may defect from the Democratic Party next year.

Axios reported early Monday that people around Manchin are discussing him leaving. It did not name any.

Those sources said Manchin would prefer to be an independent and caucus with Democrats — the same arrangement as Sen. Bernie Sanders — than to fully switch sides and join the Republicans.

The conservative West Virginia senator on Sunday said he could not support Biden's $1.75 trillion "Build Back Better" spending plan and told Fox News: "I can't get there. This is a no."

Axios reported that the move has triggered further speculation, as well as a desire among Democrats to punish Manchin.

He would be smart to go Independent. Sinema could join him. They would be The Deciders on EVERYTHING, more power than either R or D leader.

Correct. They are measuring and arranging the catbird seats now.

We’d still be a handful of votes short…

Even Obama wasn’t running the show when he was the White House pRESIDENT.

He had no idea what he was doing either.

So what. I’d love for him to become a GOP. We’d stop most judges and the voting rights bill. Biden has already got 40 judges appointed. Only Reagan has done the same in history. Sometimes most of you don’t think longer then 10 minutes.

True, but Caliph Baraq with the help of a fawning media cult projected a bit of competence.

EVERYBODY realizes SlowJoe is simply a guy reading the teleprompter. But the libs would take anybody who wasn’t Trump.

If the Democrats keep attacking him, he just might jump ship.
It would be a huge blow to the Democrats.

I’d agree but if they pass the voting bill, it’s all over. At least Mcconnell wouldn’t allow that crap on the floor.

I agree, it would put the final nail in the Biden agenda. Now is not the time to be a purist.

Given Mitch’s record on caving recently.... he might be replaced as minority/majority leader... been a few calls for that recently...

There are a *LOT* of Americans who are neither fanatical (or faithful if you want to call it that) Democrats or Republicans,

A lot of people I know utterly loath both left and right ideologies, both the utopian ‘progressives’ and the people who want to return to the values and social roles of the middle to late 20th century (or before). “Ideology sucks” is a common refrain to my observation.

Pretty much the only people I know who think Trump won are here on FR, and the only people who don’t think the current PResident doesn’t have dementia are on liberal boards.

There is a *massive* middle that is merely voting for who they hate the least, but egos on both right and left don’t want to see that.

In my opinion, the reason Mitch caved on the infrastructure bill and on the debt ceiling is precisely to secure Manchin's vote on BBB. Ultimately would have lost any battle to not raise the debt ceiling, and all it would have accomplished would have been to hand the Democrats something to point it Republicans as obstructionists.

A lot of times, winning crucial votes in the Senate requires a lot of force training, and it sometimes looks ugly. But I'm more than happy that we sank that BBB bill, because that was the killer.

Actually the bill coming up after the new year on “election reform“ will be the killer of our constitutional republic if it passes.

Fauci changes definitions all the time. I say we change “Spine” and “balls” to, see, “Manchin” or “Manchins”.
