The Oregon Republican party, decades ago a party of moderate centrists like Tom McCall and Mark Hatfield, now is overwhelmingly loyal to Donald Trump and would prefer its gubernatorial nominee to be much like the former president, even if that means that nominee can’t win in Oregon, a new poll found.
In the poll of 600 likely Oregon Republican primary voters conducted in early November, 75% said they view Trump favorably, and 58% think that the 2020 election was “stolen” from him. Just over 60% of respondents said that Republican candidates for statewide office should be “more like Trump” while 23% said they should be less like him.
That was enough to prompt John von Schlegell, a prominent Portland business executive and political novice who commissioned the poll while he considered jumping into the race, to abandon that notion.
“After looking at all the data, as much as I believe a moderate Republican would be really good for this state, it would be difficult to pull off,” said von Schlegell, co-founder of Endeavour Capital, one of Portland’s best-known private equity firms.
He has contributed to conservation groups, enthusiastically backed dam removal on the Klamath River and backed moderate Democrats like U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden.
“I’m not sure my principles would appeal to today’s Republican party,” he said. “I’m not a Trump acolyte.”
The poll, conducted by Republican pollster Fallon Research & Communications, based in Columbus, Ohio, had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
It found that 53% of likely Republican voters were most likely to vote for a candidate for governor who “focuses on fighting liberals to protect our basic freedoms, defend our borders, and stopping masks and critical race theory from being forced on our children.”

Golly gee, why wouldn't Republicans support this phony republican??
Can't fool 'em anymore, eh?? Not like the good 'ol days of Mark Hatfield.
(Hatfield, by the way, in today's parlance, would be a misogynist. But he was a pro-choice misogynist, so that was ok. You can finger as many women as you want as long as you support abortion)
Fine by me. GO TRUMP GO
As I’ve said, Republicas need to campaign to left, then govern to right....opposite of what leftist Dems do...trouble is we can’t trust they would.
I think you are thinking of Bob Packwood; Packwood was in the Senate at the same time as Mark Hatfield. Packwood was the guy who was a habitual abuser of women and was ultimately forced to resign after one too many fanny pats. Interesting how the women’s groups treated him vis a vis Ted Kennedy and Chris Dodd.
Oregon always seemed to me to be populated with “progressive” republicans, and many of them realigned with the ‘Rat party over the decades. It will be interesting to see who wins Oregon’s new congressional district, however.

Hatfield-remember him? The Balanced Budget Amendment?
“I think you are thinking of Bob Packwood”
I think you’re right. The two are synonymous in my mind and I’ve confused them.
Ah Packwood. He was one of them . Then he had to play grab ass with th women. His friends stabbed him in the front.
I’m sure it was Hatfield who did the back stabbing. It calls for a Profile in Courage amongst the Rinos from time to time. Ours won’t do it as the Rats have perfected the game.
I
GOP voters used to try to nominate the most conservative candidate who could win the general election. Now, it seems to be screw the general election just focus on the primary.
Hey, Goodnesswins...just started paying attentions to Republicans running for Governor in Oregon. This morning ISPY, 720am, interviewed Marc Thielman. Very impressed, he is the superintendent of the Alsea school district. The only district in the state to defy Gov. Brown’s close down rules and apparently no cases of covid. Sounded very Conservative.
We have lots of people stepping forward. Because, I think we might have a chance, I’m going to get involved and support someone this election.
As we go along and people drop out and group gets thinned, let me know your choices. O.K.?
I can’t remember a pro-life Republican candidate in Oregon that had a real chance. And I remember Dave Frohnmayer’s candidacy being torpedoed by Al Mobley because of the pro-life faction. It’s possible that Kate Brown has soured enough people on Democrats that it won’t matter.
If you would like more information about what’s happening in Oregon, please FReepmail me. Please send me your name by FReepmail if you want to be on this list.
You mean people that run as republicans should lie to the voters in order to get elected?
What are you doing here?
Take that over to Democrat underground where it belongs.
“I think you’re right. The two are synonymous in my mind and I’ve confused them.”
Politically, they were the same. But note how the article doesn’t bother to mention Packwood. I suspect that they don’t want us pointing out what we often get when we elect RINOs.
