Netherlands ‘going into lockdown again’ to curb omicron

LONDON (AP) — Nations across Europe moved to reimpose tougher measures to stem a new wave of COVID-19 infections spurred by the highly transmissible omicron variant, with the Netherlands leading the way by imposing a nationwide lockdown.

All non-essential stores, bars and restaurants in the Netherlands will be closed until Jan. 14 starting Sunday, caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte said at a hastily arranged press conference Saturday night. Schools and universities will shut until Jan. 9, he said.

In what is surely to prove a major disappointment, the lockdown terms also rein in private holiday celebrations. Residents only will be permitted two visitors except for Christmas and New Year’s, when four will be allowed, according to Rutte.

“The Netherlands is going into lockdown again from tomorrow,” he said, adding that the move was “unavoidable because of the fifth wave caused by the omicron variant that is bearing down on us.”

Wearing a mask has to take some of the fun out of it, right?

This strain is apparently much more transmissible. You can’t really “lock down” for weeks and avoid all contact with others. It’s just not possible. People won’t do it.
When does it end?

Omicron symptoms = mild symptoms of being tired, acky and scratchy throat

Who in life has not experienced that at least one time?

Yet this corrupt politicians want to shut down the economy.
They are acting like it’s the end of the world, and we are all going to die from Omicron.

It’s ridiculous!

I live in a red bastion of a blue county in a blue state. They have “strict” mask mandates that half the people just ignore. Any small store or convenience store, more people without mask. Supermarkets or other large stores they are more adamant about masks.

Whatever is going on, people have just resigned themselves to fate. Corporate stores have to follow corporate policies but individuals and small businesses are making their own decisions. They can pass laws, rules, regulations. Enforcing them is another matter.

Lockdowns didn’t work against less-contagious variants, so what’s the answer now? I know, more lockdowns!

These people are actually insane.

Such a lockdown for omicron is rather pointless:
1. Most vaccinated people are protected
2. unvaccinated/faded vaxed people can get a jab and join group 1
3. the rapidly spreading variant will get unvaxed people in short order after any lifting of the lockdown(in 14/28/whatever# of days) and jabbed people that lack the ability to mount a good immune response

The essential things people need to realize are:
a. people with good immune response can live a safe vaxed life, including doing their jobs in businesses of all types
b. people with good immunity will survive
c. people not in group a or b need to find that out and live
carefully, most especially so if the Pfizer “cat” Covid drug or a monoclonal antibody won’t save them.

The essential things governments need to realize are that:
A. most people are now vaxed or naturally immune and need to get on with their lives
B. ending international travel is the best way to prevent variant spread
C. The Refugee Convention and refugee/asylum laws need to be suspended as per B.
