The Mayor of London has declared a "major incident" due to the rapid spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant in the capital.
Sadiq Khan said Omicron was now the "dominant variant" in London and was having an impact on staff absences in the emergency services across the city.
He said London was the UK region with the largest number of Covid cases.
Latest government data shows there are 1,534 Covid patients in London hospitals - up 28.6% on last week.
Mr Khan said in the last 24 hours, London had seen the largest number of new cases since the coronavirus pandemic began - more than 26,000.
He added: "Hospital admissions are going up, but also staff absences are going up by a massive level.
"So I've taken the decision in consultation with our partners to declare a major incident today."
Major incidents have previously been called in response to the Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017 and the terror attacks at Westminster Bridge and London Bridge.
A major incident is any emergency which requires the implementation of special arrangements by one or all of the emergency services, the NHS or the local authority.
It means the emergency services and hospitals cannot guarantee their normal level of response.

New London lockdowns will mandate everyone on their knees at home in the dark, wearing two masks 24 hours a day, with full vax jab proof near them, and ready to convert to Islam in phase two when ordered.
Try that in the US and millions will go along with it.

It’s called “we still need a reason to shut everything down and mail out another billion ballots to vacant lots” excuse...
So people get somewhat severe nasal and respiratory symptoms and cough for a few days, then recover largely on their own, or with the help of some over-the-counter remedies like Cold-Eeze, Zicam, or Airborne, all of which provide supplemental zinc plus some form of zinc ionophore that simply stops the the coronavirus of whatever variation from replicating.
The virus particles stop replicating, the progress of the disease stops.
To bring really heavy artillery to bear on the coronavirus, a regimen of 50 mg of zinc, in the form of Zn++ ion, and 5,000 IU Vitamin D3, or perhaps 100 mg of hydroxychloroquine, taken daily, will quell even the broadest exposure to COVID-19 Wuhan virus.
And do it for pennies a day.
The Muslim mayor was re-elected in 2018 and just this past may of 2021. The idiots in London get what they deserve, a Muslim version of Bill De Blasio.

People are vaccinated and they’re seeing record cases. Time for a reality check. Covid is here, it’s endemic, it’s not going away. The only rational option is to live with it. Some will get it, some won’t, that’s the nature of a virus.
I’ve been fortunate. My wife had it, she’s unvaxxed, fairly mild, she’s over it. Daughter and Son-in-law got it. Fairly mild, recovering well. I’m not afraid.
Exactly. Funny how covid “proper” has taken 2 years, and apparently, many many people,still haven’t got it, but now in just 2 weeks, omicon is “ravaging nations”, and “cases are skyrocketing to an alarming level”
