The CEOs of two of America’s largest airlines said this week that they do not believe that the Biden administration’s continued mask mandate requiring travelers to wear masks while flying serves much benefit considering the fact that airplanes have advanced filtration systems that remove nearly all airborne contamination from the cabin.
The comments from American Airlines CEO Doug Parker and Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly came on Wednesday during a Senate committee hearing on the financial support the industry received during the pandemic.
CNN reported:
Both Kelly and Parker, who each have announced plans to retire as CEOs in the coming months, mentioned that high-grade HEPA air filters on planes capture virtually all airborne contamination and air quality is helped by how frequently cabin air is exchanged with fresh air from outside the cabin.
“I think the case is very strong that masks don’t add much, if anything, in the air cabin environment,” Kelly said. “It is very safe and very high quality compared to any other indoor setting.”
Parker agreed, saying, “I concur, an aircraft is the safest place you can be.”
“It’s true of all of our aircraft — they all have the same HEPA filters and air flow,” Parker added.
A study conducted by Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health researchers last October found that there was low risk of transmission of the coronavirus on flights.

For starters, maybe they can raise the age of required masking from 2 to 12.
Great, now they now that the plane has already skooted out of the barn they get their vocal cords back...
I wore a mask yesterday three times...the first times in SIX months! I went to the health clinic for blood work and had to don the damn thing.
I had forgotten how awful they are. We cancelled our Hawaii trip in March because we don’t want to wear the damned things on the plane there, all over Hawaii, and on the plane home. Screw that.
Gee, guess some people will be calling those CEOs as a witness to their lawsuit because they were kicked off planes for no mask, or it slipped.
If the filters are so good, let us smoke on planes!
Since they are near retirement they felt free to fess up.
Yep. Funny how they’re all about safety and health until profits drop.
If they would have stood up and said this:
Senator, we have just finished compiling our list of Elected Officials in the US and effective Immediately NONE of them will be Allowed on our planes or in our terminals, we will have ANY and ALL Elected Officials Arrested for Trespassing until all of these silly mandates are lifted forever.
Have a Nice Day and WALK OUT!!!
Haven’t worn one since October when the city my employer is in mandated it. I forgot how bad they were as I didn’t have to wear one from May-Sept.
I sure won't fly. I'll spend my own money to drive vs fly on a business trip.
not sure why it has taken so long for people to understand this. I get the hardened stiff material, and the air breathes out over the top, does not filtrate anything, but it is all appearance, makes people FEEL better.
More likely the flight crews are getting fed up with having to not only wear masks but also be the mask police.
Hmmm. You may be on to something, they probably thought it was gonna end in Jan, then Xiden extend it a few more months. Just 100 days from Jan 20th or so, right Biden.
I hear a motion. Is there a second?
(crickets...)
But when passengers are sitting within say eighteen inches or less of each other there’s that chance of spread, no social distancing there; this is to say that masks work which they don’t.
They already pack you in like sardines, smashed up against other passengers. The face diapers are about as useful on a plane as is picking up glowing Chernobyl graphite with a pair of oven mitts.
I don’t understand why everyone is pushing everyone else to wear a mask. Wear one of that makes you feel better. You only have control over yourself. Make decisions based on your self.
I had a bone marrow transplant and was a bubble girl. I had to wear a mask in a car because the vents could have mold /fungus particles. I had to wear a mask outside for the same reasons. I had zero immune system, my immune system memory was wiped clean. I took personal precautions and still do. Once I walked out of my house, I never expected anything from another person. Inside my home was a different story. I lived in a pretty clean home. Carpets had to be replaced. Walls bleached down. You get the picture. I was never in fear outside expecting from others like people are doing these days. It’s flipping insane to see the behavior from my POV

It is interesting that the fired pilots cannot even look for a job with another airline because of non-compete agreements.
I’ve flown commercially about a dozen times since this whole cluster began. It’s truly made the already terrible even worse. The actual flight is just kabuki while TSA is even more unbearable. I have found that after the initial mask check, I can usually nurse a beverage and snacks for the entire duration of the flight without drawing the flight attendant’s ire.
