The Polish government revealed a homeland defense bill on Tuesday, which could see a massive boost to the country's military.
The leader of the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS), Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who is also deputy prime minister, said the bill comes as a response to current global trends and Poland's political geography.
Speaking at a news conference in Warsaw, Kaczynski cited "Russia's imperial ambitions" and the migrant challenge on its eastern border with Belarus as top security challenges.
"If we want to avoid the worst, that is war, we have to act according to the old rule: 'If you want peace, prepare for war,'"Kaczynski said.

Poland hates the Russians. It will provide safe haven and arms to Ukrainian nationalists if Russia invades Ukraine.
Poland needs nuclear weapons.
Stand with Poland! F Putin!
Another take is begging for another partition.
I have no idea what threat Russia and Belarus are posing to Poland.
On the other hand, Poland is sponsoring regime change in Belarus and mulling European trade restrictions on Russia to force a “democratic transition” to pro-European liberal administration in Moscow.
Does anyone remember Russia or Belarus telling Poland how it needs to run its country?
The flea is capable to annoy a dog big time, but the solution is only a one bite away.
They have every reason to fear and hate the Russians. Most recently in Katyn massacre I and Katyn massacre II.
Went to high school in Chicago which has a large Polish population. A class mate gave me a Solidarnosc tshirt. This was in the early 80s. Wish I had kept that tshirt. Gained weight over the years and got rid of it.
I’ve hated Russia all my life.
F Russia.
“Does anyone remember Russia or Belarus telling Poland how it needs to run its country?”
Maybe for almost 50 years after WWII? Does that count?
No. The times changed.
Yup, they hate the Russians, just about as much as they hate the Germans.
Agree 100%
“Does anyone remember Russia or Belarus telling Poland how it needs to run its country?”
Uh, yeah. Let’s start with the Russian mudaks invading Poland with their Nazi friends and then slaughtering 70,000 Polish military and officials at the Katyn Forest. And then the Russians annexed half of Poland.
That was followed by a Russian enslavement of the Poles that lasted more than fifty years.
Poland was repeatedly threatened by Russia when Poland wanted to join NATO.
Russia threatened Poland when the Poles deported people who accepted Russian passports (and citizenship) in order to defend themselves from the same thug tactic the Russians used in other countries to claim the right to ‘protect’ Russian citizens living in those countries.
After Russia’s invasion and annexation of eastern Ukraine in 2014 the Russian thugocracy again threatened Poland when Poland requested NATO reinforcements to deter any possible Russian aggression.
Various Polish municipalities have received threats for removing or relocating Soviet-era monuments to criminals like Lenin, Stalin, and Red Army occupiers.
Russia constantly leverages gas exports to try to influence Polish politics.
The Russian FIS was exposed in the 1990’s as running operations against the Polish state and this led to the resignation of a Polish PM who had been compromised by FIS agent Vladimir Alganov.
The best example was in 2009 when the Russians ran an exercise called ‘Zapad’ which was a simulated nuclear attack against Poland. That surely endeared the scumbag Russians to their former slaves.
I can go on if you wish.
I can tell a lot to disprove all of your points but the main idea is that the Cold War was over in 1989.
Nothing justified the Polish aggressive posture post that date.
The gas leverage is a baloney. All the Polish energy troubles are the result of their unprovoked war on Russian exports.
I think Poland is the end game for Russia. First the Ukraine. Then Latvia Estonia and Lithuania. Then Poland.
The Cold War most certainly did not end in 1989.
While the Southern and Central Groups of Forces withdrew from Eastern Europe in an orderly fashion it still took them until fall of 1993 to disengage from occupied Eastern Europe.
The Northern Group wasn’t so speedy and by the time they fully stood down in 1993 they were Russian forces and not Soviet forces.
The worst was the Western Group of Forces. General Boris Snetkov refused the order to stand down from normal operations and withdraw. Quite to the contrary he put his forces on alert and caused the last serious confrontation between NATO and the USSR before his junior officers forcibly removed the imbecile.
The Western Group of Forces last elements departed a unified Germany in late 1994.
And as we’re seeing, the Cold War merely took a holiday. It never really ended. The only thing that changed was that the thieves in Moscow call themselves Russian again.
More bullshit. It takes time to move forces.
It wasn’t Russia that restarted the Cold War. What justified enlargement of NATO in 1997?
...but the main idea is that the Cold War was over in 1989.
Did they apologize for the Katyn massacre? Did they compensate the victims’ families? Did they apologize for forcing Communism on the Polish people?
Their leader is a former Commie agent who did not repudiate Communism. There are still monuments to that evil bastard Lenin in Russia. They are still living in their Communist past.
Why should anyone trust Russia? It has never been a civilized country.
Correct. Russian allies include N. Korea, Venezuela,China, Cuba and a handful of FReepers. Russians are the lowest on the ladder. Always have been and always will be.

We in Central Europe wanted to join NATO to show that we belong to the West and to tell Russia in no uncertain terms that its imperial ambitions were over and we had nothing in common.
