A Michigan-based company has vastly expanded its recall of meat that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Alexander & Hornung is now recalling 2,320,774 pounds of meat products, with an expanded list of cooked ham and pepperoni products, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said in a news release.
The first recall, announced Dec. 5, was for 234,391 pounds of cooked ham and pepperoni products.
The meat being recalled can be identified by looking at the circular USDA mark of inspection on the label. All the recalled products carry the establishment number “EST. M10125,” the FSIS said.
People who find the meat products in their refrigerators or freezers should throw it out.
The company has provided an expanded list of recalled products with more sell-by dates. Not all the products carry the Alexander and Hornung brand. Some are private label products for retail customers.
“The affected products are being recalled as a precaution due to possible exposure to Listeria monocytogenes,” Alexander & Hornung said in a news release. “While there have been no illnesses or complaints associated with the products and there is no conclusive evidence that the products were contaminated at the time of shipment, the voluntary recall is being initiated out of an abundance of caution.”
Whole Foods is recalling its Wellshire Farms Fully Cooked Hams because Alexander & Hornung is a co-packer for the product, a news release says. Five kinds of Wellshire ham are being recalled.

The USDA says listeria is killed by proper cooking so why destroy 2.3 million pounds of meat?
Also, ham and pepperoni are already precooked, so it is often served without being warmed up (e.g. pepperoni on Ritz crackers).
Brandon will announce an investigation tomorrow morning to see if they are recalling the meat just to curtail supply and make him look bad.
That’s a good point. And lawsuits. It’s always lawsuits anymore.
I’d LOL but it’s possible.
A lot of people don’t know how to cook meat because cooking is racist. There are kinds of temperatures and other numbers that
they don’t understand.
I hate to even say this to an angry elephant but ... thin the herd! :)
Isn’t it against the law in California now to throw out food?
A solution for some of the ‘homeless’ problem?
LOL
As these meats were "pre-cooked" a great many will simply be warmed up. Some will be eaten cold.
And unless it is heated to 185 degrees the bacteria will continue to be present.
If you are pregnant you will often miscarry.
I have seen recalls for many reasons. Some were down right stupid reasons.
But Listeria is one where you do not fool around.
I think we will do prime rib again this year.
Prime rib for Christmas has already been ordered! 20 lbs.
I think 8 should feed us. 20 is a good number.
20 for dinner, 20 lbs.
Lots of the weight is bone (cut off, tied back on) and fat. Leaves a little for leftovers, too!
Oh, and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
merry merry christmas. did one on the grill.
What a waste !
