Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged local governments to optimize their land resources to achieve food self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on grain imports in the coming years, the latest indication the country is bracing for a potential conflict with the United States.
At the Communist Party of China’s (CPC) Central Economic Work Conference held on December 8, Xi said China had to ensure grain security for its 1.4 billion people.
“The more food we have, the more we have to think about when there is no food,” Xi said. “I’ve repeatedly said that Chinese people must firmly hold their rice bowls in their own hands at all times and should never let others grab our necks in the matter of food supply, a basic survival issue.
“In the past, food was transferred from the South to the North, but now it is transferred from the North to the South. In some places, a lot of fertile fields are used to build farms and grow flowers, fruits and trees. What about the crops?” Xi said.
“For a big country like ours, ensuring the supply of primary products is a major strategic issue. Soybeans, iron ore, crude oil, natural gas, copper and aluminum ore… all these are connected to the fate of our nation.”
Xi said China had to achieve self-sufficiency for all these strategic materials and set up reserve systems to store them for use at special times.
Xi’s speech came after the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on December 6 that China’s grain production increased by 13.4 million tons, or 2%, to 685 million tons in 2021 from last year. The NBS said extreme weather and flooding slashed Henan’s grain output by only 2.8 million tons this year.
At the same time, China imported 130 million tons of ----

Brandon should say stuff like this, and help Kamala with the those pesky border issues too
They always plan 3-5 years out. So probably October 2024.
Our view of China is very distorted. I don’t know what the correct view is, but objectively the negative consequences of a foray into Taiwan still appear to outweigh any benefit to me.
China has structural economic problems. We do too. They are very dependent on exports to Western nations and IF that dried up it would be a massive shock to their debt ridden system. Very bad for business.
Asian news has also had many stories about runs on banks in China. They were so frequent that they passed laws about it and have arrested people. Does that mean something more than localized panic? I don’t know, but its never a good sign.
China’s neighbors have been contemplating and moving forwards with closer ties for mutual defense. This does not get much coverage here in America and it does not involve Taiwan from what I can see, but IF China decided to go forward with an invasion or take-over of Taiwan it might result in an alliance of nations around them far stronger than what currently exist.
With that being said, our view of what is really happening there is very limited. Might Xi recognize that he could save himself from internal problems with a nationalistic burst of wag the dog? It’s possible.
IF they did aggressively move on Taiwan there is obviously more going on behind the scenes than we know about because the whole concept seems very un-Chinese and un-CCP (the new corrupt version that cares about $$$$).
Communist regimes in this stage of life are FAR MORE about making money for the corruptocrats in charge than spreading communism to the world (we have this too). I find it hard to believe that the CCP fat cats (their 1% of elites) are going to potentially take a massive hit to their wallets to assuage Xi’s ego about Taiwan.
I guess we will find out and predictions seem to be all over the place.
There is only almost enough to go around.... just means instead of the DNC/Chinese buying it, other countries will. Same with Rice as we produce 5-6 % and India would strave without it.
If our farmers were Patriots, not one ounce of food would go to china. No hog farmers would sell to Smithfield.
It’s been said before... Autarky is essential for the fatherland!
wants to be sure that his SOLDIERS have food while that is going on

That would be a change from what they have now for the better
Well that does not matter all that much because the US has been a net importer of food for decades :
local, state and federal governments having successfully used the Nixon ‘War On Natural Resource Harvesters’ to greatly limit commercial sea food harvest and put uncountable numbers of fishermen, ranchers and farmers out of business - either through taxation, use of the endangered species act, and inane laws that deliberately limit or ban uses of efficient machinery and gear.
Didn’t Mao try this with the Great Leap Forward — to disastrous effect?
