The number of COVID-19 cases reported in Africa last week increased by 83 percent over the previous week, marking the fastest surge the continent has seen this year, though deaths remained relatively low.
Africa reported more than 196,000 new coronavirus cases during the week that ended on Dec. 12, compared to roughly 107,000 cases recorded the previous week, according to a statement from the World Health Organization (WHO) released Tuesday.
The number of new infections in Africa is doubling every five days, according to the WHO, which is the shortest time span observed this year.

Not a scientific survey... just an observation... however, has anyone else noticed that whenever a country or region bucks the trend, it gets “fixed.” India was doing just fine. When noticed, suddenly the cases surged. Sweden was doing fine. When noticed, the cases surged. Africa was doing fine. It was recently noticed and now cases are surging.
What do they have in common? India and Africa expose the efficacy of therapeutics and Sweden exposes the power of natural immunity... can’t have that, can we?
Probably coincides with a vaccination push.

The other reality is that Omicron represents the natural progression of most endemic viruses...they mutate to be less lethal. Look for Omicron (or it's sinister, extra sneaky, kung-fu grip, hard to detect, sister variant™) to be blamed for all ICU and deaths there as this continues.
