I have a general distrust of any “charity” that is a large organization with a permanent staff. In my experience, these organizations invariably end up being nothing more than self-perpetuating commercial enterprises.

I serve on advisory boards for several non-profit organizations. They all have three things in common that I believe are essential to the credibility of the organizations and their missions:

1. They have more board members than employees.

2. The board members are actively engaged as volunteers in the work of the organizations

3. They have so few employees that I can meet with all of them at one time in an ordinary-sized conference room.
