'The situation is dire'; Salvation Army facing toy, donation shortage ahead of holidays

SEATTLE - The Salvation Army is facing a shortage of toys and donations ahead of the holiday season, and urge communities to find a way to help.

The nonprofit reports it gets 75% of total annual donations during November and December, and they are once again in need of support. That help can come in the form of an online donation at the virtual Northwest Red Kettle.

"There are many reasons why both financial and toy donations are down this year, not the least of which is likely pandemic fatigue and concerns about employment and the future," said Colonel Cindy Foley of the NW Salvation Army Division. "We are actually trying to provide food, shelter, toys and clothing to double the number of families we served last Christmas, and in the midst of the growing need we are seeing fewer people donating at our virtual and physical kettles."

Not only is the nonprofit organization short on donations, they also are in desperate need of bell ringers to staff the red kettles seen at businesses around the country.

"The situation is dire, and we are asking our generous supporters in the region to donate to the virtual Northwest Red Kettle as well as make donations at every physical kettle in whatever way you can," said Foley.

Such a shame. I read enough to convince myself this was allowed from the top of the organization. One trip to their web page was all it took Indulging the whim of two people, the woke couple, at SA was all it took to bring down a decades old tradition.

As I have said, I won’t be insulted and still be a friend. There are limits and I will find some other way help. Right now though, after my decades of paying some very generous taxes and seeing it pissed away much of it to my disadvantage, I’m not feeling very generous. There may be some who do need help but I struggle to see how, with all the largess and waste going on, they are failing to get what they need that I can provide any better than what has been offered on my behalf.

I always dropped a $20 in the first red kettle I saw during the season. Not this year. Go woke, go broke.

I have given thousands of dollars to The Salvation Army over the years. At Christmas, it was first on the list.

Never again. Never.

SA thought they could run an anti-white propaganda campaign and the deplorables wouldn’t notice.

We noticed!

Now they are trying to lie about it.

We noticed!

I was “nominated” to be one of the UW coordinators at a big company one year. More like voluntold. It was part of the “executive” growth pot program. I did my best to be a good sport and play along but it sickened me. I’m not there now and didn’t stay long after that event.

I’m not into coercion.

When I was in the USN back in the Seventies, they used to pressure all of us to give “officially” to the United Way.

Everyone.

It pissed me off so much I haven’t given them a cent since then. And that was over forty five years ago.

The Salvation Army gets most of its support from white Christians, who their recent wokeness has been alienating. They need to understand that.

I did both. My wife and I gave large sums, and put cash in every kettle. I loved doing it, didn’t do it out of guilt.

It was an unadvertised rule (but known by word of mouth)
at one company I was at that unless you gave generously to United Way every year, you would never get promoted beyond manager level.

"Salvation Army — White donors need to offer ‘Sincere Apology’ for their collective Racism…"
“Many have come to believe that we live in a post-racial society, but racism is very real for our brothers and sisters who are refused jobs and housing, denied basic rights and brutalized and oppressed simply because of the color of their skin,”

Yet this is actually what is effected under the premise of combating racism via quota-based hiring.

Such a shame to turn your back on an organization you have supported as you and I have. I have to do that though. That is the only way I can fight back. It still makes me very sad though. I don’t want to do this but must. It is a little like having to punish a loved child. Maybe they will learn but if they don’t I can’t help them.

I can relate to that.

Here I sit in the twilight of a mediocre career, condemned by the strength of my convictions.

At least I have that much to show for it all.

Look at their website

https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/

In their box of issues they address, they have LGBTQ services and diversity in the top row.

St. Jude and Tunnel to Towers is about all who see any significant donations from me anymore.

The company I worked for was traditionally on the conservative side. They had been in business for 115 years and you rarely get there by being stupid. But a couple of years after I came on board they hired several leftists into senior management positions - and the company lurched into stupid in big ways.

They had long practiced corporate philanthropy but when they joined the “Give to United Way” annual donation drive it took on a sinister tone. What had traditionally been a well intended but loosely organized company effort to encourage giving to charity became a tightly orchestrated effort to make the company look good.

The first year was a success as employees had not yet been subjected to any of the underhanded tactics. There was a huge build-up to the following year and when donations didn’t exceed the first year tally management was pissed - and (stupidly) vocally so. Note to management: scolding your employees for something that is %100 voluntary rarely works in your favor.

There was a dark tone to the following years drive. Senior management had drilled lower managers and supervisors in what had become the unofficial company line: “We (you drones) are all about giving and we expect you to give.”

Whereas the original stance of the company had been good natured voluntary giving to the charity of your choice, now United Way was to be our clearing house for ALL your giving. Donations to anyone else would not be recognized. I had supported Gary Sinice’s veterans charity and wanted to again but they weren’t on UA’s list. I mentioned that to the drive coordinator and he suggested I petition UA to add them. Instead I made my donation directly to the charity. For that I got a daily visit from staffers detailed to dun errant non-givers - like me. I complained to my boss that I had held my tongue up to this point but if they continued to harass me I would be quiet no longer.

He knew that it was no idle threat because I had established a “take no shyt” attitude - whether it be with management, other employees, or (notoriously) the unions.

My boss expressed empathy at my experience and shared similar misgivings at their strident attitudes saying “There is more than you know going on.”

Charity and charitable giving should be a private thing. Encouraging employees toward charitable giving may be well intended but is (more often than not) fraught with peril. My company was not only engaging in intimidation of their employees but actually positioning themselves as a clearinghouse for donations to UA (which in turn was acting as a clearinghouse for individual pre-selected charities). They actually instituted an online (official corporate form) donation form (is this even legal?!) to “facilitate” our giving.

With the rise of the “woke” I would never subject my employees to UA or their tactics.

I finally settled on a strategy to get them off my back. When the next drive began I struck an offended and defiant pose. I declared that “Planned Parenthood is consummately evil and I will never donate to any organization where my money can wind up in their coffers.”

They argued with me, stating that I could “uncheck the name of any org that we didn’t want to receive any of our donation but I remained steadfast in my refusal to go along with their sleazy schemes.

Apparently I wasn’t the only one having issues with the drive coordinators. Lots of complaints were lodged with HR and the following year featured a decidedly relaxed tone to it. They gave me a wide berth and my charitable giving was NOT through them for the rest of my career there.
